I recently ran across a CZ 550 Varmint in .243Win.

I was impressed, for the money it looked and felt like a good gun. I asked the dealer if they made it in .223 and he said "No".

The only gun CZ makes in .223 is a standard barreled 527.

ANybody have an idea why this is? Just curious.

That's not true. Well, it is true that they don't make the 550 in a 223, but they do make a several different 223s. The 550 is the larger action, pretty much anything larger than 22 Hornet, 222 and 223 goes in the 527, not the 550. They make a varmint version of the 527 and they're available with either a gray laminated stock or a kevlar stock. Maybe walnut too, just never seen one.
