I picked up another N-frame today: a 1985-87 production Lew Horton Model 624, 3" RB RR WO.

Yum.

(More pics to follow as soon as I ditch these hideous Pachmayrs in favor of some Eagles or Ahrend's)

The ammo in the speedloader is actually .44 Maggie used as a photo prop. Probably (without looking) 165gr Personal Defense JHPs...

Tamara - Grips

I have Ahrends Moradillo on mine, and its' M24 cousin. Highly figured, and looks good on either blue or stainless. I took Kims poly off with 0000 steel wool, put on four coats of Tru Oil, steel wooling in between, and after the last coat became almost dry, but still a little tacky, "spit shined" it in with a hand-rubbed coat of Ballistol. The grain doesn't "move" much, but that is bootiful, bootiful wood

Can't make up my mind over the Ahrend's or some Eagle Secret Service grips. Both are tasty... Hmmm... Checkered? Smooth?

Argh! Oh, well, no rush...

Shapewise (new word) the grip frame allows for a wide variation of styles. The Eagle SS are nice, and one of the prettiest sets I have are in their Indian Rosewood. The stuff is as hard as marble, and (unusual for a dalbergia) takes an oil finish very well. The Ahrends are slimmer, and only a little longer than the SS. The Moradillo is a Columbian/Peruvian high-altitude hardwood, nearly the color of the Eagle Rosewood, but with a wild grain pattern. Lack of equipment (and talent) forbids any pics of mine.

So, Tamara....

The file name of your photo is "6241.jpg"

Does that mean this is your six thousandth, two hundred and forty first pistol?

This is subjective, but I think most N-frames look best and shoot best in six-inch bbl. form...

A friend purchased pretty much the same gun, only blue instead of stainless, last year around the same time that I purchased my 24-3 6.5".

3" N frames... So much to recommend them, so little to condemn them...

Am I going to be roundly :cuss: ed at for that last statement, Tams?

Tamara,

Great looking little 624, but you're right, those grips ruin it. I just got one, and was fortunate enough it still had the original S&W finger grooves on it. Unfortunately, the only pic I have handy exceeds the size limit for THR!

Tamara,

Congrats! I have the blue version (M24). I put a pair of early S&W "Combat" stocks in Mahogany on it and it looks much better. This is a nice companion piece to the 3.5" Model 27 I had round butted. I'm hard put to say which one I like better.

Congrats on your .44 Spec, that has become my favoritest big bore caliber. They are really nice, & I prefer short barrels for general purpose use. The longer barreled N frames are sweet to shoot as well.....

624 3" square butt with those nasty Pachs....

If I could scan a photo in, I'd do it...

I'll be checking some of the other recommendations for grips.

Sacramento THR group-the 624 will be at the next shoot.

gumshoe4
February 8, 2003, 08:19 PM
Tamara-I kind of figured your 624 was a round butt.

I couldn't find a 3" round butt, so I had a 6 1/2" square butt converted by a barrel change, but I've never had the butt rounded on mine. The Pachs make them all look the same, but I want better grips on mine, too.

Must be off to the annual Gung Hay Fat Choy party. Happy New Year to all-I think this is the year of the Ram....

That's a very nice revolver.

Please exuse my ignorance, but is the 624 a 44 Special or is it a 44 Magnum?

Walosi
February 8, 2003, 10:54 PM
The model 24 and 624 are the blue and stainless .44 Specials - .44 Magnums are model 29 and 629. The stainless revolvers carry the "6" prefix...usually :D

"Er, something looks funny about the backstrap? Or is that just the way the photo is?"

"Wrong size grips?"

You both win a Kewpie Doll.

The rubber grips that came with it were atrocious. My dealer offered me a pair of Uncle Mike's that he said were better. After we put them on I noticed that they didn't fit quite right and I could not adjust them. Turns out they are for the "K/L" frame.

:(

So I will be eager to see what kind of grips Tamara can find or that others can suggest. I can shoot it as it is but life is too short to have the wrong grips on your gun.

Just ordered some Ahrend's smooth cocobolos for it from Brownell's (they didn't have moradillo in the catalog. :( ).

I have a thing for Aged Ivory Micarta, but fancy wood grains put me into a totaly obsessive mode :what: I put Ahrends Moradillos on two 3" N Frames, and then two Cocobolos on K and L snubs. I've been all over the web looking for specifics on Moradillo, and have found very little, other than its use in decorative boxes and fancy furniture. Ahrends buys all his wood from the same genus, however - "Woodchuckius Purdiest Maximus" :) Let me know when they get there - got some finishing tips that will light them up like a neon sign.

OK, this thread got me looking at s&w 24s , Impulse buying is one of my weaknesses:( . I been offered a 24, blueing about 85 to 90 %, S prefix, 4 screws, sweet action, 4" barrel, & tight cylinder/timing. The grips are checkered walnut Herretts. How much should I be paying ?

Tamara
February 20, 2003, 04:40 PM
Blue Book lists $375 for 80% to $575 for 98%, assuming 6.5" tube. Add a 40% premium for the 4" bbl.

I just saw a post over on Sixgunner - guy got a 24 for $350, in a bit better condition (just reading the descriptions) than what you have posted. They go from that to $450, depending on the area in which they are sold, and just how deep the bug done bit you. They are superb revolvers. Rubbing Hoppes on your temples will help the shivers

Thanks for the estimates! He went for $300 :D , Its not as pretty as all the ones posted because of holster wear, But it haven't been fired much. In the future, please make the pictures more blurry & threads less interesting, My impulse gene is easily stimulated:D

now all I need is a set of dies & some good load data....

February 20, 2003, 06:11 PM
You'll have to check with S&W for the cost, but the re-blue they did on my 3" makes it almost too pretty to put in a holster. At that price, you should almost have enough room for it :D

I just got a set of square butt N-frame Hogue monogrips for my 624. Yeah, I know they're rubber, but they feel SO good and work SO well for me.

Incidentally, I REALLY like that little fixed sight, short barrel, case-colored .44 Special N-frame in the photo above. That is one SLICK little bangstick. I want one.

Just what I needed: Another N-frame!

Since my first reply to Tamara's original topic, I would have to add to her quote. Just what Ineeded: Another N-frame "44 Special"!

Made a deal for a 1950 Target Model 44 Special that has lost it's collector's value but is still a shooter (which is all I want). It's original 6.5" barrel was badly cut down by some previous owner. In the 1970s it was sent back to S&W and they screwed a 70s vintage 4" M24 barrel into the 1953 vintage frame. Dull, fifty+ year old finish on frame and cylinder - bright, fractory fresh blue on barrel. Looks kind of goofy but everything is tight and functional. Since there is no longer any "collectability" to loose, I'm having the guy I buying it from (a gunsmith) bead blast and blue it to get the whole thing matching. It will be my new 44 Special shooter.

Looking forward to delivery time (couple weeks) of yet "Another N-frame".

They are so darned HEAVY, and all.

Me! ME! ME! I LOVE those thangs!

I have a 95% five screw pre-Model 27, 3.5" on lay away now, and can barely wait! It is SOOOOO nice, my preferred packing mode will probably be in a padded case.

Now, for a 1926 Military 3rd Model Hand Ejector and a M58. (Who am I kidding? I'd have the M27 out of lay away if not for recent financial reverses--Like getting married.

Oh, well, she's a good sport about most stuff. Just renewed her CHL, and it looks like I'm gonna lose a High Power to her . . . .
