Darn lovehandles and IWB attempt.

Bought a beautifully made Don Hume IWB for my SP101's. Fit and finish are very nice and the price was very right. Got to try it out last evening and to my dismay, in a strong side carry my d*** love handles shove the butt of the gun out at a pronounced angle. Guess I'm limited to 1. Weight loss program or 2., small of back or shoulder holster carry, or 3., hike my britches up over the offending fat and have no room for the Boys. You fellas with the clothing catalog bodies should be grateful.

Ha,ha. Must be a high-ride type of holster. I've got the same issues and ran into the same problem, but if I use a low type IWB where just the grip is above the belt line the handle just kinda molds itself into my handles. This is actually pretty handy. I don't think I've ever been made even in summer t-shirt & shorts with a round-butt L-frame stuck at 3:00.

Last year at this time, I was one overweight individual. And IWB was very difficult for me.
From August to Thanksgiving, I lost about 40 pounds (down to 167 from 210, still 5'9" tall :) ), and I've kept it off. Man, does it make it easier to carry (and my blood pressure's down where it should be).
I feel for you. Best of luck with it.

Pappy- I Rreally didn't know there was a difference like high ride and low ride. What model of holster works for your IWB? Us "generous proportioned" men need to work together (grin). And Eric you done good!

I tried a nice looking Bianchi IWB holster that held most of a snubnose above the belt and did the same thing you described. Now I favor the cheap nylon/clip types like Uncle Mikes sells. I still like good leather for on the belt carry though.

Yeah me too..the high rides are too high...I use a Desantis Thum break between my belt and pants..it rides just right on me..when I've tried an IWB or high ride it just ain't right.....trial and error can be expensive.I have more holsters I don't use than I do...:(

I'm sorry I realize this is a bit off topic but.....How about trying to lose some weight? I don't mean that in a 'jerky' way, but I always preach physical fitness. I consider physical fitness a key component in my 'readiness' plan, equal to or even more important than range time and equipment mtc. Regular excercise will improve your health, looks, and confidence..not to mention making your wardrobe easier to deal with. A combo of weight resistance training + cardio is the best bet, but if this isn't possible 20-30 minutes of walking 3 times a week will do wonders coupled with a reasonably healthy diet.
I'm done preaching now, I hope I didn't annoy you too much. As you know the first rule of gunfighting is "have a gun". Don't fall into the trap of going unarmed just because carrying is not comfortable. I think you're on the right track by considering shoulder rigs and SOB rigs but you might want to consider a different style IWB and experiment with placement.
Good luck, be safe.

I'm not overweight, but I still don't like IWB carry. I've tried it and always have found it very uncomfortable. I carry OWB at 4:00. If I'm unable to wear a covering garment for whatever reason, then I'm limited to pocket carry or an ankle holster. My SP101 or Glock 26 conceal very easily in a pancake holster at 4:00, with an untucked shirt or a sweater vest. If I'm wearing a jacket, then a 1911 or even my full size HK USP 45 is no problem.

DITTO. Except with a Model 60 and an XD-40 service model.

I'm laughing with you on this one. :D
I use pocket carry and a fanny pack for the same reasons you cited.

I've got an Uncle Mike's IWB nylon size 36 that works well for me (and I'm a bit afflicted with "Dun-Laps Syndrome" as well). At under $15 I wasn't hesitant about taking a razor blade and needle & thread to modify it to what I wanted. They are so cheap - buy a couple. Hack & stitch away. I think you will find that you can "customize" one to suit your needs.
By the way for you "flat bellys" - Dun-Laps Syndrome is diagnosed when your belly has done laped over your belt buckel. Those afflicted with Dun-Laps Syndrome are also typically strong proponants of the See - Food diet. I see food - I eat it.
I know, I can hear it now. Oh the horror - the horror. But Lord, please take me with a smile on my face - and a trickle of grease gravy running down my cheek.

im 6'04" and USED to weigh in at 258lbs.
now im down to 230lbs.
the Atkins diet, in a modified version......;) light excersize also.......
i wasnt "fat" but i was getting a bit on the stout side in the waist line.
now, not only do my IWB fit alot better, i can pocket carry a "j" frame in jeans easy enough since i didnt buy new smaller clothes.......
my old clothes fit me better now. i was in denial back then, with a snug 38" waist and 36" pants:uhoh:
again, not to be a smart ass, but loosing a little weight is not only easy as i found out, if youre disciplined even a little bit. but my cholesterol went from 201 to 163!!
i had to look at it as a personal challenge, was i going to let the fat get the best of me? or was i incharged of me?
p.s. i call it a "dickdo"
its when your gut sticks out farther than your dick do!!! LOL.

I'm not sure where your wearing your holster but I assume 4:00. If your like me you may find that carrying just in front of the hip at 2:30 puts it into a natural hollow between the belly and the hip.

AHHHH something I know a bit about..:D
here is my .02 pesos...
instead of buying another holster I would suggest you do this: Place the revolver into your waistband with only the grip showing...Does this poke you as well?? If not then go and get a "lowride" IWB...IF it does, get a nice pancake holster or pocket holster..
I to am losing a battle of the buldge...If there hadnt been such bad press about it I would prolly be on the Adkin's diet as we speak...
I usually carry OWB and in the pocket...

Thought-provoking suggestions all and thanks once more. I am 6'5" and 290 pounds. As a teenager I was very overweight and even when I lost down to 200 pounds, the "love handles" remained. Didn't want to go the surgery route, so I just learned to live with it. Yesterday I spent the day with my UNLOADED SP101 2.25 inch in my right hand pocket. The butt printed a little, but overall it concealed well. I think my best bet is a profile-disguising pocket holster in looser jeans. I very seldom wear anything but jeans, so I believe I can pull it off as they say. Any suggestions for a pocket holster that covers the hammer and is profiled so that the holster pulls away from the gun at draw? I prefer leather .Guess I'll try to sell the Don Hume IWB.

toolmaker,

Off topic, I know, but....if all that's holding you back is the bad press then take my advice and ignore it because all that gloom and doom stuff is nothing but a load of bull$hit.

I remember those days well. IWB holster, a snub-nose revolver and a bad case of "Dunlop's Disease". I lost weight(ok a little weight) but the problem didn't go away until the snubbie went away and magically became a LW Commander. No annoying pain in hip and better accuracy.

For duty I carry a Fist IWB for a GLK 19/26 and have found I prefer to carry it just forward of my hip bone. I can also carry it behind the hip bone but when I bend over the grip prints through. In the forward position it will not print even with the GLK 19, and I also have a lovley set of love handles! The fist model I use is the thinnest available and it really does make a difference.
