Carry in library?

I have a Florida CCW. A week ago a police officer told me it's illegal to carry in libraries.
Is this true?

790.06 (12) No license issued pursuant to this section shall authorize any person to carry a concealed weapon or firearm into any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05; any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station; any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse; any courtroom, except that nothing in this section would preclude a judge from carrying a concealed weapon or determining who will carry a concealed weapon in his or her courtroom; any polling place; any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district; any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof; any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; any school administration building; any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose; any elementary or secondary school facility; any area technical center; any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile; inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport, provided that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, which firearm is encased for shipment for purposes of checking such firearm as baggage to be lawfully transported on any aircraft; or any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law. Any person who willfully violates any provision of this subsection commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

Unless the library is on school property, there is no restriction.

check out they should have an answer for you. I know here in oregon you can carry in libraries. in fact, the only place you *can't* carry is where it's federally prohibited (airports, military bases, etc)

Not meaning to introduce contention here, but if I recall the Second Amendment accurately, it doesn't mention anyplace at all where a citizen can't bear arms.

Ah, well, times change and politicians will pass anything to try and look busy.

Thanks, guys! I was pretty sure it’s legal, but I didn’t want to get in trouble and have my CCW revoked.

The key word is "concealed." If you don't get made, no one knows you are carrying, and problem.

Hello All.

You see, the problem is that LEO's are not supposed to be nor are they required to be experts on the law. They are experts at preserving the peace and criminal apprehension. The other day I had a police officer try and tell me that I couldn't carry into a bank. I informed her that unless the bank was posted, of course I could. From the discussions (and arguments) I've had with police officers, the consensus seems to be for them to do what they think they ought to do and let the lawyers sort it out later. On point, though, here in Oklahoma, if the library is posted, you cannot carry there. Since the majority of libraries are owned and operated by library trusts, the AG has issued an opinion that these trusts are the de facto owners of the libraries and may post at their discretion.

PATH: Who told you that? The only place you cannot carry in NY(even NYC) are schools, and you can get around that if you have the permission of the administrator. Are you sure that the person who told you that wasn't referring to a library on school grounds?

Feel free to PM me if you want to take this "off-line".

Some libraries in Oklahoma are operated as agencies of the city, and I would be cautious about carrying there. Most are posted, anyway. The statute does not mention libraries, but makes anyplace where the government is doing business with the public off limits. I don't want to be the test case on it.

O.K. to carry in library but you can't discharge it unless you have a silencer installed. Must not make noise in a library. Al in Md

It never hurts to carry a copy of FS790.06 (12) with you. IIRC when a permit is first issued you're provided a copy of the complete chapter.

It would be nice if someone printed up laminated credit card sized copies for wallet carry.

Finally got an answer from the library administration – it’s OK to carry there!
