Ruger, where are the Target Gray GP-100's and SP-101's?
They should sell like hotcakes.

I saw a 4" GP100 in grey at a gun show a few mos ago. Nice looking gun, but I was cash-poor at the moment. I think they were a special run for one of the distributors.

That is exactly the GP100 I want. It's listed on their web site as the KGP-141TG, (http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=1739&return=Y) but with an MSRP of $0.00?? I wonder if that's their way of saying it's no longer manufactured?

Not for me, thanks. Can't get the finish right after sawing and filing most of that stupid "underlug" off. Fairly easy with regular stainless and you can even take the "safety novel" off the barrel at the same time.

The gray GPs/SPs are the same metallurgy underneath as regular. This is NOT the case with SRHs - the "gray guns" in 454/480 are using a better grade of stainless.

These were a special run made for - I believe - Lipsey's. try contacting them and just having your dealer order you one. Lipsey's (http://www.lipseys.com/home/home.aspx)

I got mine!! I really like the gun, and the coating seems to be holding up fine, but then I've only got 500 rounds through it. I figure if the coating fails I'll just have it all polished off as it's just a stainless gun underneath. Price was the same as for stainless too. You do get it in a green box instead of grey though.

I went to a dealer to specifically ask if they could order me one and he looked at me like I was stupid and told me there were two in the case right behind me. I looked them both over and bought the one I thought looked the best. I haven't seen an SP-101 yet, but then I've already got a plain stainless one so probably wouldn't buy one anyhow unless they made them in 9mm again.

Jim,

I don't like full-length underlugs, myself. What is the reason for them (686, GP-100, SP-101)? Is it just for weight/recoil?

Sole purpose of the underlug is to put some more weight forward for recoil control and balance.

I prefer the look of full underlug models . To me it gives a more finished/complete look. I suppose that little extra weight does aid in muzzle lift during recoil. TEHO. I also generally prefer the longer bbls too. Toyed with a 6" GP100 for some time. Hoping that some distributor will contract for a 8" model.

Right, and to save money on the final machining cost to cut it off...

Near as I can tell, Ruger's barrel blanks on the SP/GPs is an "extrusion process", or they're running a looooong piece of barstock through a set of automated grinders coming in at multiple directions. That gives you a long piece from which to cut multiple barrels out of in different lengths.

That would certainly be the most cost-effective way to do it, and would work just fine. (Imagine something a bit like an automated carwash - instead of just soaping/washing the thing going through there's grinders chewing at it.)

Problem is, it makes cutting off the underlugs a separate machine process.

I bought one of those three months ago and love it. I really like the finish on it. It is a bedside gun so, I cannot attest to the durability of the finish though.

It depends on the barrel length as to what I prefer. For 4" and under I prefer the look of the full underlug. For anything over that I don't.

I agree with BryanP. I like the full underlug for 4" and under. Over that though, is just too much.
