Do you carry a dedicated car gun? Not including your CCW piece. How much ammo do you have for it?

Arkansas does not allow firearms to be loaded in a vehicle (sans CCW). Ammo must not be accessible at the same time as the gun.

I also travel to and from a university almost daily. Another no-no.

If I did, it would most likely be a lever-action in .357mag. Lots of stuff can be taken care of that way.

You have to be careful around here - a legal CCW piece is ok, and normally any old loaded gun is just fine but if you happen into North LV or Boulder City that non-CCW piece is now illegal. I always have at least one.

I always have a rifle or shotgun....sometimes both.

Rifle is usually a levergun of some sort. Loaded. Maybe a spare box or partial box of ammo. More for impromptu hunting than anything else.

Shotgun is most likely the 870 defense gun. Primarily for impromptu shooting for fun.

Only my CCW, which is on me all the time. I don't regularly leave a weapon in the car, as cars are too easily broken in-to.

I try NEVER to carry "handgu" ANYWHERE! Whenever possible I try to wipe it up and dispose of it properly! (LOL, tears streaming...)

(I apologize! English is one of the most entertaining languages on the face of this fine little planet!)

In Illinois, a dedicated car gun is an official no-no. The car gun would be the carry gun with a case on the seat nearby for those inconvenient moments when the constables decide to pull you over. 'Takes about six to seven seconds to become "legal": unloaded and cased. Doesn't matter where the ammo is, as long as it's not in the gun.

You can see why rifles and shotguns are out of the question.

Note: Semi-auto pistols better than revolvers; a loaded magazine and one loose (from chamber) are easier to deal with and explain than a lap full of loose ammo.

Well there was time no telling what all was in the vehicle at any given time.

Since I do have to attend classes on campus this semester and all...I park off campus and just use my CCW.

Idiotic IMO no carry on Campus. I have one class that I leave at 10 pm, some of us may stay in lab till 11pm. Folks work attend class , or attend class and then go to work. Folks might have car trouble to and fro...one never knows the where or when of an encounter.

Like I told some ladies that were concerned and have CCW - Adapt, Overcome, Improvise...we did.

Since I travel through Nevada and the PRK, I have to be careful what truck gun is carried. I chose the Mini-14 as the beater. PC for PRK. In the bed locked up under a cover. Also works well for impromptu hikes in Utah and varmint issues as they arise. I would rather have something a little more accurate, but it does the trick. No optics. I even left the original "wood" stock which is scratched a little. Stainless for low maintenance.

I thought about the shotgun, but decided that I do not want to be on the side of the interstate addressing a newb CHP as to why I have an "assault shotgun" in my truck :uhoh:

A lever gun would probably be more PC. But capacity is an issue for me. If the SHTF I want to be able to get back to UT. Zombies need alot of shooting

I keep a yugo SKS in the truck, with 100rds on stripper clips in the handy leather case it came with.

The main reason i keep the SKS in the car, is that if it gets a little dirt in it, it will still work, and if it gets a little rust on it, I won't cry.

I have put down 2 hit deer with it so far.

i live in the great state of Virginia, which has it's share of humid days. I put a light coat of Mili-tec grease on all exposed metal parts of the rifle, and have yet to get any rust.

Not legal in my city and if I get a job I'm interviewing for next week -- it won't be legal to carry there either. Guns stay on me or locked away.

In Arizona I can be held liable for any harm caused by the illegal use of my stolen firearm if I don't take "reasonable" precautions to prevent its theft, so my gun stays with me not in the car. Besides that I don't have anyplace to hide one when I ride my mountain bike to work.

how much I have changed over the years.....

I don't carry a dedicated car gun anymore. I live in the greater Los Angeles area of the People's Democratic Socialist Republic of California, so I'm always in an urban setting. I drive a more or less station wagon these days, and it does not have an adequate storage space. I carry the work gun with me, so...

Flash back to 1979. I drove a Ford Fairmont sedan with all the police options. One of the fastest things on the road, and I could catch most of the others in the curves. I built a gun rack that housed (most all the time) a .22 lr Remington bolt gun; a Remington 870 riot gun; and a real Beretta BM 59 for those special occasions.

In a couple of years, I will be out in the hinterland again. I'll have some kind of rifle along. Good night, all.

No loaded rifles allowed in cars in the People's Rebublik of Massachusetts.

However, I shoot it so much, that my .22 rifle with a trigger lock (mandatory) pretty much lives in my trunk, which can only be opened with a key. So I guess the answer is yes and no. :)

I dont have car gun now, but am planning on adding a car shotgun and possible rifle this summer ,as soon as I add toolboxes. For the shotgun it will be a simple single shot breakopen. The rifle Im still up in the air. Im leaning between acheap milsurp like my mosin m44 or sks or finding a used 30-30 lever. First thing is to actually install my toolboxes so i can put the guns somewhere :)

Not long after I started dating my wife, we were coming home form a church function in dress clothes, and passed a deer hit on the road. It's back was broken, but would have suffered for quite a while, so I finished it off with my pocketknife. I ended up with blood all over my pants and shoes, wondering what in the world she must be thinking. Now, I keep a pistol in the truck. When my CCL comes in, I may not, because I'll have one on me. I'm thinking about keeping my SKS in my truck, though.

I usually carry a rifle when traveling. Have a .357 lever gun. Just got a Swedish Mauser with 20" barrell. May use it instead.
If I rememeber right, handguns have to be unloaded down here.
Don't normally carry anything when shopping/errands, etc. More afraid of gun being stolen than anything.
Someday may go to hassle of getting CCW.

In my work as a criminal defense lawyer, I've run across the statistic that - at least here locally - guns that are stolen are most frequently stolen from cars.

No "car gun" for me - unless I'm in the car. :)

April 27, 2004, 12:23 AM
I've got an M1 Carbine in each car and truck and a couple pistols in each car and truck.

In Texas you can carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in your car but unless you are "traveling" you can't have a handgun in the car without a carry license.

(of course you can carry your handgun to the range, etc without a carry license)

Arizona is very liberal about carry, open carry is permited.

I keep a S&W model 10 in the glove box, always have my CCW gun on me either an SP 101 .357 or 45 Acp. Also have some kind of rifle in the trunk, an Enfield, Mauser, or SKS.

I think that locking your car door is a reasonable precaution against theft. Locking the car doors, the glove box and parking in a well traveled area seem like additional reasonable precautions. Whether this sways a civil jury is another matter.

I cannot carry at work and prefer to have a means of protection when traveling to and from.

Depending on the situation, ~1,500 rds. Of course, it's for a Crosman 1377 that stays in my "emergency survival kit." Seeing as how I almost never leave the city, I can't think of a reason to carry a rifle back there, much less a situation when I'd have enough time to pop the trunk, go around behind the car, get the rifle out, load, and fire it.

But then again I guess some people only carry one screwdriver in their tool box too.

I would if I could find a decent gun safe that fit under my front seat. The times I've searched for one all end up the same - too thick to fit.

Any suggestions on a way to "permanently" store a gun SECURELY and with easy access? The glove box is too hard to get to.

Also, if you get stopped for something like a broken tail light and the LEO notices you have a small safe in the car, can he order you to open it? Does he need probable cause or whatever?

I sometimes skirt the northern tip of Mao-tse-chusetts where I don't have a CCW! It would suck if I happened to get pulled over by a nosy trooper. Right now I carry CCW in NH & Maine but when I know I might drop in on Ted Kennedy's state I go naked or at least hide my piece in the trunk. If I had a decent safe, I could at least have easy access in an emergency.

Thanks,
jAK-47

Besides my CCW and "always" on my person, I keep a pre-Taurus Rossi 92 Trapper .357 carbine in my Ranger. It is in a soft case with the zipper secured with a small padlock and two hinged steel straps and hasps secured to the rear wall of the cab. A 3/8" steel rod connects the two hasps and runs through the carry handles on the case. The rod is secured with a hardened padlock. Rig is of my own design and was fabricated from scrap, a "government" job at my workplace done on my own time.

Two MTM "ammo wallets" containing 20 rds. are always with it, and usually a 50 rd box in the console. I use "Renaissance Wax" on both the steel and wood for protection against corrosion. Silicone car wax used to do it, but I can't find it anymore. No rust, but I'm still considering getting it refinished in matte "Armalloy" (if they're still around?) or NP3.

I carried a shotgun sometimes but then I got to thinking of when I would most likely need a long gun instead of the 2 or 3 pistols I had handy.

Basically the shotgun is great for pistol distance but beyond that I would worry about the spread
hitting people besides the BG.

So most likely I would need a gun that would do the job I can't do with a pistol.

One scenario for instance, and you can think up dozens, would be like a physco with an AK in a Wal Mart parking lot.
If I was already beyound say 50 yards I would want a rifle to stop him.

So my thinking is under 50 yards a pistol or shotgun will do the job but I want a "long range" second gun.

BTW some might ask, if I'm beyound 50 yards why don't I just try to get away.
I'de never leave people to be shot down if I had the means to stop it.

Saiga "Sporter" in 7.62 x 39, behind the seat – Compact, reliable, plenty powerful, and cheap enough to not worry about rust or losing it to theft.

Some perspective on all the hand-wringing about "allowing" a car gun to fall into the hands of thieves: How many motorists are convicted of the crime of "allowing" a thief to steal their automobiles before committing other crimes?

If the vehicle is locked and the gun is out of sight, it's a pretty hard sell to prove negligence in court.

But my CCW is always a 1911 .45 auto, so I have extra loaded mags stashed in the car...which is parked in my patrol area(hotel security). Sometimes I have a beater 1911 in the car, but mostly I rely on my CCW or duty piece.
I have a beater M-N M44 and several stripper clips in the car now- it was very inexpensive, pretty accurate and reliable and ammo is dirt cheap. Before is was a Mechtech CCU with an officer's frame attached which worked pretty good for nighly patrols and 'emergency use but I had to sell the unit when money got tight. I prefer a 'real' rifle anyway.
Eventually I'll add a couple of more rifles to the battery, probably a SKS for the car and an AK for my personal CQB..but my enjoyment of 1911's means I am normally getting another of those!

When we lived back in America my wife and I both carried revolvers. We never had a CCW because we never thought about it. We assumed we had the right.

Now, I was stationed in Washington, D.C. and knew that carrying was a no-no, but we did anyway. If you have every visited or lived there you know what I mean.

I would rather be judged by 12 than carried out by 6.

Here in Hawaii it is really mellow. We live in the country and everybody gets along. The criminals here are really not violent unless you are into drugs which they do kill each other.
