(Ohio) picked up my CHL today

Got it, along with a friend, from Geauga county, far east side of Cleveland. Only took six days for the process. We got in the car and I put my Makarov on and we then went to a couple stores and a Wendy's. I kept checking to see if I was printing lol but it was ok.

It's hard to keep the gun in plain sight when you're in the car. In the car, I wore my IWB holster between my belt and pants with my shirt pulled up so the whole thing was visible but with the seat belt on it's still kinda covered lol. That part of the law needs to go! Then we got into MI on our way back to school and I promptly pulled my shirt back down hehe.

UT,

I turned in my application for my permit this past Thursday, so I should have a little over a week left to go until I get mine. What format is the actual permit in? Is it a plastic card like a driver's license, or what?

Here's to counting down the days... :D

It's just like a driver's license. It says GEAUGA COUNTY in big red letters and underneath says "Ohio License to Carry a Concealed Handgun". I thought it was odd that they had the county name so prominently displayed, this is afterall a state-wide permit. It has a sheriff's star hologram on it, looks kinda neat.

Are you a student at BG? I co-op in Fostoria and have an apartment in BG, I'll be back there in July.

rock! now, if they'll just get the reciprocity going the other way, I won't have to go through the chinese firedrill of putting everything up crossing the border when I go shooting with my friends in Cleveland..

That car thing is almost enough to keep me from carrying. When combined w/ the government building restriction (I spend a -lot- of time in them) it becomes almost completely pointless. Heck, a garage I park in regularly has a 'no guns--gov't facility' sign up.

Damn, I've been dragging my feet not wanting to spend all that time in line.

Franklin county is a liberal, democapic hellhole. Maybe I'll drive over to licking and see if I can get some justice . :cuss:

UT,

Hmm, sounds like an interesting license. That is a little strange about having the county name so prominently displayed.

Oh yeah, btw, I was a student at BG, now I work full time here in town. Did you happen to take your CCW training class out with Jeff Stearns? There was someone in my class who qualified with a Makarov...

Orion,

I just had my appointment with with Franklin County Sheriff's office Wed. 4/21 and it was FAR from busy! I was in and out with the application process in 10 minutes.... 2 days later I got my call from the Sheriff's Office saying my background check had cleared and was approved. Monday morning I'll be picking it up .... 18 days after the law went into effect.

GO FOR IT THe whold process was MUCH easier than anticipated They haven't gotten near the turnout they were expecting

Got a question for those of you that have gotten or applied for a permit.

When you qualify, do you have to use the same gun you intend on carrying?
Can you qualify with a semi auto, then turn around and carry a revolver, or vice versa?
.

I'll be going in this Thurs. to turn in the paperwork. I hope Hamilton Co. doesn't take too long to issue it.

You can carry whatever handgun you want in ohio. It's nice in that respect, some states require you to list the gun you will be carrying on the permit.

UT,

I was the one that Jeff and Todd were referring to as "Dirty Harry"! Fancy bumping into you on here. :)

Ok, speaking of carry guns, here's a question for all of us Ohioans:

What do you plan on carrying?

My current rotation will include three guns:

1. my Randall 1911 Commander in a Comp-tac IWB Pro-Undercover rig.

2. My K-Frame model 66 (this is the gun I qualified with), 2.5" bbl.

3. My model 637 (J-Frame, for all those times when I'm too lazy to strap a bigger gun on my belt. Just drop 'er in the pocket and go!)

Ok, so that's me. How about y'all?

Not when you understand what control freaks the govt. bureaucrats and legislature are.

Just look at the Ohio Lic. Plate for vehicles, the county is prominently displayed.

Life is so much easier for them when they do not have to work to figure out if your John Smith at 1313 Mockingbird Lane, Canton in Stark County as opposed to John Smith at 1313 Mockingbird Lane, Canton, Cuyahoga County.

I got a big kick out of the signs posted on all the Rest Stops on I-75 prohibiting the carrying of firearms in the rest stop building. I guess you're on your own for those late night rest stops. Are they considered "Government Buildings?" Best use for a Govt' building yet: a potty.

Hope for Michigan reciprocity soon!

I finished my "training" on Sat, and plan on seeing the Stark Co sherrif on Wed. The OFCC websight says Stark - Warning: grossly limited appointment schedule What does this mean? Can I drop off my app. or do I need to make an Appt? Anybody here get a permit from Stark Co?

I plan on hopping on a jet in July to visit the family for a week. Think I'll drop in on the ole Sheriff and see what he can do for me.

Think they will give one to a resident of Ohio that lives in Arizona?;)

Probably not. Ohio has no "Non-resident" permit yet. In order to qualify for an Ohio permit you must be a resident of your county or an adjacent county for at least 90 days. They want addresses, SSN and fingerprints. The Ohio BCI will conduct a background check and the FBI will do an additional one if you've not been an Ohio resident for the last five CONSECUTIVE years.

Lying on the app (like everything else in Ohio) is a felony.

Pheonix,

The Stark County Sheriff is backed up into July for processing appointments. You might want to consider going through Wayne County, they take walk-ins.

Turned mine in the 14th ... still waiting for Clinton County to approve.

The Stark County Sheriff is backed up into July for processing appointments

I understood the law to read 45 days max????

What do you plan on carrying?

SIG 220 .45ACP
Colt 1991A1, Colt Gold Cup
Springfield 1911A1 MilSpec
Glock 20, 30, or 17
Colt Government PocketLite .380
P3AT KelTech .380
S&W M586, M19 .357Mag
Maybe a new S&W 367 Snubby.

Probably won't carry all of these at the same time.

Parke1

DamnedDirtyApe,

The law does indeed say there is a 45 day max. However, that 45 day period is the amount of time, at a maximum, that the sheriff has between the time he accepts the application and the time he hands out the license.

There is (unfortunately) no regulation as to how many apps an office will process in a day, or how many days the waiting list can stretch...

"Probably won't carry all of these at the same time." Hehehe. Very funny, smart alec. ;)

I'm in Michigan and I'm eagerly awaiting for Ohio to set up reciprocity with my state as I drive through Ohio several times a year.

I usually carry a Makarov as well. I figure I'll use one of my mil-surp Mak shoulder holsters for car carry, and transfer to my IWB once I'm out of the car. (I have a few extra shoulder holsters I could part with if anyone wants one)

I tell you, that "Handgun must be visible while in the car" rule is the stupidiest part of any CCW law I've ever heard of!

And thats where I'll test the system. I have been a resident of Lorain County for 37 years. There wont be any false information on the application. My home of record is my brothers house in Ohio.

Being military my home of record is that address. Not the area that I live in. Wierd huh. But it works out for me.

I will in fact check it out when I get back that way to see what they have to say.

How many police are going to shoot CCW holders when they see a gun in a car? I would have the window rolled down, light on, and hands on the top of the steering wheel, and tell the officer first thing, I have a CCW permit, and have it in your hand,

AND MAKE NO SUDDEN MOVES!!!!!

And how many soccer moms in SUVs will pull up next to someone, see a pistol and frantically call 911?

Lenny,
That's pretty cool then! I'd be interested to hear exactly how they handle that. I've been an Ohio resident for 27 years total, but moved awayfor four years and then moved back four years ago. Since it's not consecutive, they made me pay for the extra FBI check.

And how many soccer moms in SUVs will pull up next to someone, see a pistol and frantically call 911?

Really though, how many soccer moms in SUVs have you ever seen that had ANY idea as to what was going on in the world around them?
