Cleaning my in-laws summer home, Found a Harrington and Richardson Model 162 Topper Buck Model. 12 gauge, 3" cylinder.

Its a single shot break top model. In surprisingly good shape (he had it in a plastic bag, cork in the barrel and an oily rag around it . . . .

Question is, what should I know about this gun? I didn't realize H&R made shotguns, the workmanship looks decent I guess. Trying to figure out if it should have a place of honor or become a beater.

No sentimental value; he bought it at a hardware store back 25 years ago when they got the house and never shot it.

Not sure to the worth, but man, I wish more people did long-term storage like that. I have seen quite a few rusted guns come in with the, "I was cleaning out the basement\attic..." story.

H&R made very sturdy utilitarian shotguns. Most were single shots that I am aware of. IIRC over the years they went through changes and are now NEF, New England Firearms.

My Dad passed on to me a H&R Topper 20 gauge whenever I was old enough to hunt. Nice and sturdy and still works great 13 years after I got it. Especially considering that he had used it for at least that long before he gave it to me.

One of the better utility shotguns. Good and stout, so is the kick as with all of these light shotguns.

Go shoot it....
