Preferences for Defensive Ammo

I’m interested in everyone’s choices. I usually buy American (Gold Dots—US has better hollowpoints), but I’ve noticed that the foreign ammo seems to be loaded hotter (I’ll use S&B FMJ for my .25ACP backup—only load I’ve seen punch through two 1”x4” treated lumber).

Which are you?

Thanks in advance…:D

In truth, I ain't really tried any foreign stuff! I have been ''stuck'' on hydrashocks for ages - 9mm and 38 spl .......... guess I reckon they'll do.

I'll see what we get later on as more posts come in.

I run 230 gr Hydrashoks in all three .45s
I have looked into some other rounds, but havent seen anything appreciably better out there, The Hydrashoks are accurate, they feed every time, and the work well on the street.

Not that I wouldn't buy foreign made premium defensive ammo, it is just that all that I currently buy is American:

- 1st Speer Gold Dots (in all my calibers)
-2nd (mostly 9mm and .38spl) Fed Hydra Shok
-occasional (in .357mag, .40S&W and .45acp) Winchester White Box JHP personal defense ammo

I'll probably start carrying Gold Dots in my Kahr.

Rolling your own for defensive purposes? I can see it now "This vigilante murderer scribed 'bad guy' on every bullet he made especially at home to kill better than normal ammo"

I use the S&B and Fiocchi in IDPA, but for self-defense loads, I use Gold Dot.

I roll my own.

I voted for two; the American made brands, and
the Roll Your Own stuff.

You see, at short distances of 0 to about 21 feet
its awfully hard to beat the Speer 148 grain HBWC
loaded backwards; that is, with the hollow base
protruding from the top of the cartridge when
loaded in .38 Special cases.

Now, for semi-auto's I prefer factory Federal Hydra-Shok's
in all caliber's.

Best Wishes,

Lately I've been using Winchester's USA "white box" 230-grain JHPs for my .45. When I had a .357 I absolutely loved their 110-grain JHPs...they were a breeze to shoot from my Model 19.

IMO Glaser Safety Slugs are unequaled in stopping power - for a defensive round.

Original blue tips - #12 shot - are the most frangible.
Newer silver tips - #6 shot - offer best penetration/cavitation.

For defensive ammo my main criteria are cost and ease of purchase. That means I won't rely on something that I have to order and something that is prohibitively expensive meaning I won't practice enough with it. So:
.40 155gr. Win Silvertips @$22/50 rounds
.38 +p Remington 158gr SWCHP @$17/50 rounds
.357 110gr JHP Winchester USA @$14/50 rounds.
These can all be purchased locally and I can shoot hundreds of rounds a year in practice - work on that most important shot placement.

The same stuff Chuck Taylor recomends to his students and CCW's himself:

Win. Ranger SXT 230 gr. +P, .45 ACP & Ranger SXT 127 gr. +P+, 9x19
& Glaser Blue-tips where appropriate.
