Questions about FFLs

Just out of curiosity, how does one get an FFL? Does one have to work at/run a gun shop/shooting range? If one has an FFL can he/she buy virtually any pre ban gun/destructive device he/she wants? Also, what happens to post '86 machine guns owned by an FFL if he/she dies and there is nobody in their family that can legally posses them?

the daze of the kitchen table FFL buying cheap guns for his buddies has past

The ATF has been actively culling the number of FFLs for the last 10 years.
They are using zoning ordinances to disqualify as many as possible.

If you have a legitimate business plan and financing, you might be able to open a gunstore.

ATF now requires an actual business/storefront before they will issue a dealer FFL (01) or a SOT to deal in NFA weapons. The license to deal in NFA weapons is $1000/yr. As a dealer of NFA weapons, you cannot buy a post-86 machinegun unless you have a written request by a police/government agency requesting a demonstration of that weapon. If you give up the Class III SOT, you must transfer a post-86 machinegun to another dealer or a government agency. You cannot retain it. You can retain a pre-86 machinegun if you give up your license. In both cases, if you die, the machinegun must be transfered to another dealer/agency.
