.338 Whisper

got to try it out this weekend. A 7mm Benchrest case necked up to .338, firing a 250 gr boattail at just subsonic velocity with 12.2 gr H4227, out of a Contender carbine with a suppressor.

We were fire-forming brass so I can't really comment on accuracy. But an amazing round! The suppressed carbine makes a little 'snap' much like a pneumatic air pistol, which is so incongruous when you feel the recoil (which isn't bad, BTW).

The idea is to maintain energy with low velocity by using a hugely disproportionately large bullet. Seems to work: bullets at 50 yd pass completely through a 14" diameter hardwood log.

My dream, I just want one because they're cool, gun is a .338 Whisper built on a mini mauser action. Can you cram a 275 grain or larger bullet into that case?

The range of Whisper cartridges in my collection, from the article on Silent sniping cartridges on my website:

The .338 is the 8.6x38; the 7.62x51 at the end is there for scale.

Uh, that shouldn't be the JD Jones page...

Quarterbore is an AR15.commer(here as well I believe) who owns a couple of the rifles he mentions on his page and strives to provide as much information as possible.

It's a fair bit better than the SSK Industries pages though http://www.sskindustries.com/ where not a whole lot of detail is given.

Really cool! I'd like a suppressed .300Whisper AR someday.

but you can't shoot it in your back yard, and you can't shoot it all day and still have all your fillings!

Finished fire-forming 200 rds yesterday. 100 yd accuracy is 3 MOA with a dot sight, with which I can barely make out the bull. Now comes the real load development. This is not my rifle but I'm the nearest experienced reloader, so in return for showing the owner how to load, and doing a lot of it myself, I get to play with it when we go to the range. More to follow!

artherd, when the AW ban sunsets...

Get yerself an AR10 A4, have the sucker rebarreled to something with a 308Win case head and a BIG aerodynamic bullet. 338Whisper should be very possible in an AR10, if not something even bigger :)

Yeah, a sound suppressed AR10 would be killer :)

Uglygun- COOOOOL ;) (I need to Recall most of CA's senators first though.) What Whisper rounds are based on the .308 case? .338 Whisper AR-10 would rock.

Good point about the range ;P. But with the Armalite brake, the gun kicks less than a .243! (I'm serious.) Armalite AR-30.

is based on .30-'06/.308 family I beleive, since it takes the same shellholder as those two cartridges.

What supressor were you using?

artherd, I've already got a Ca. registered AR10 :)

Ofcourse I couldn't get the evil sound suppressor here in Ca. due to it's NFA status but I do intend to fully outfit my AR10 when I get the opportunity. The current A4 upper will get the muzzle brake nocked off to be replaced by a Phantom or Vortex type flash suppressor, the stock will likely be replaced with an Magpul M93 because it is my AR10 that I feel most needs an adjustable stock, and then I may wind up throwing an ARMS rifle length SIR on it.

Then, have a second upper made for it in something like 260 Rem in a target configuration with something along the lines of a Ops Inc muzzle brake/suppressor mount. Something to take advantage of for the one day I finally do leave California :)

Somebody on the AR15.com forums had a freakin necked up 50cal. they were shooting from the AR10, not sure what they used for parent brass but it was a nasty lookin monkey.

The .500 Whisper is, to me, the single greatest cartridge ever. I am absolutely head over heels in love. The thought of one is almost enough to make me bend over for F-Troop and get registered for a suppressor.
