1k to cache the cabin

April 30, 2004, 12:53 AM
Hypothetical... You've bought that new cabin,

It's got a lockable metal gun cabinet, but you hate to leave your darlin's there while you're away. With a budget of under a thousand dollars, what would you choose to keep at the cabin to cover birds and beasts?

My choice from GA ads,

$320 Savage 110 .30-06, 22" barrel, 3x9x40 scope
$229 Win 1300 12g Ranger, 3" chamber, 28" barrel
$309 S&W 19-4 .357 magnum revolver, 6" barrel
$139 Yugo SKS 7.62x39 simi-auto rifle, 22" barrel

uh...you're only spending 3 bucks on ammo?

April 30, 2004, 01:29 AM
-Mec Single Stage reloader, 12 ga a given... plenty of component to make loads The stuff to convert is cheap enough to convert to 20, 28 and .410. This includes a bunch of slugs...been awhile but I remember how to reload these.

-LOTs of 22lr ammo, did I mention LOTs?

-Now either go with a Milsurp and lots of cheap ammo...

- Single stage reloader to make rifle and handgun ammo...

Heck I'm out of Budget, but with a Mec, 870 and Marlin 60
- well if this cabin is for "serious situations" - I recall an old saying...

"With one of those you can get all them you want". ;)

April 30, 2004, 01:48 AM
Mossy 500
Marlin 60
Yugo SKS

Now you can buy lots of ammo! :)

April 30, 2004, 02:13 AM
Dang, ammo! :)

April 30, 2004, 06:35 AM
ahhh nothing..got a perfactly good back seat in the truck I can pile all the guns I want to take out to a rodent poop farm in the woods. PS only idiots leave guns in a cabin in the woods.

$79 for a used H&R of NEF 12 gauge
$60 for a used 22lr

The rest woud be ammo.

I don't want to leave anything of worth in a cabin, But what might be buried in PVC further out back ???????

April 30, 2004, 07:54 AM
I would mostly likely only leave one inexpensive longgun hidden in the cabin. I would prefer to transfer the guns back and forth, and have the one gun in the cabin as a last resort. Probally my mosin nagant out of what I have now, and a 30-30 lever action or pump shotgun out of my guns on the wish list.

April 30, 2004, 08:10 AM
I totally agree with a SKS/Mosin being stashed there. Probably a cheep 22 with many, many cases of ammo. Don't really care about a shotgun if I am trying to live off the land, shoot it all with a 22. A cheap 357 probaly wouldnt hurt iether. As for leaving them there. Maybe wrapped in cosmoline and a watter proof container buried under a floor board.

April 30, 2004, 08:32 AM
I would go with a nice repeater .22 bolt action, a .22 revolver and a bunch of ammo. Couldn't justify leaving much more hidden in the cabin and the most likely use would be for some plinking when we came down for the day or something and all I have is my carry gun on me.

Taurus Trapper (4" revolver)
Marlin 1894C (w/ inexpensive shotgun scope - scout config.)
Both 38spcl/357mag.

Rem 870.

April 30, 2004, 10:53 AM
Remy 870 used under250
10/22 160
M44 100

Rest ammo, mags and a scope for the 10/22

870 take care of the birds and beast!
10/22 for the little things
M44 for everything in between

April 30, 2004, 11:28 AM
An SKS w/lots of ammo
a Makarov w/lots of ammo
a .22lr rifle w/lots of ammo

No need to get fancy.

April 30, 2004, 11:30 AM
Two Yugo SKSs, 4 Mausers of some variation (all four in 8mm).
The rest spent on ammo. $400 buys a pretty good chunk of 7.62x39 and 8mm.

April 30, 2004, 11:39 AM
Remington 870 Express 12ga ~$200.00
Ruger Mark II .22 ~$200.00
Winchester 94 30-30 ~$200.00

Ammo, coffee and jerky to use up the rest of the $$$.

Realistically, 4 bricks of .22, a couple cases of 12ga shells and maybe 100 rounds of Core-Lokt 170gr. 30-30 would be a good start. Toss in a few pakages of jerky, and that should leave $100 or so for the coffee. For me, that just might be enough caffeine. :)

My buddy and I are planning to own a cabin together. The plan is to have a safe cemented into the floor with floor boards over it, and a nice area rug over that. No use leaving them out in the open for people to steal.

Here is what we are planning to leave out there.

Ruger 10/22 $165
Mossberg 500 $200
Norinco SKS $250
.357 Revolver $250

April 30, 2004, 11:49 AM
Coleman dual-fuel stove (white gas and unleaded gasoline), plus conversion kit for propane. Coupla Coleman lamps. Lotsa candles. A good water filter. A kerosene heater. Coupla-three Aladdin kerosene mantle lamps (Note: these are not your daddy's old hurricane lanterns!). Mantles for all the above. Lotsa matches. Salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce. Coffee, tea and sugar. Few hundred pounds of rice. A bunch of beef bullion cubes. Coupla hunnert pounds of dried beans, like pintos. Some wind-up radio/flashlights (Freeplay, formerly Baygen). A hand-turned grain mill and a short ton of wheat. Soap.

If you had all those, you'd have a great start. All of it would be less than a grand.

Wish I'da thunk before hitting Post....

Bug spray, both repellants and killers. Sunblock. Good set of knives. Good set of cast-iron cookware. Yeah, that'd about do it, if you and yours are basically healthy and active. Stop at Sam's on the way there (unless the S has already HTF), and buy a hunnert bux worth of Tylenol, Advil, and multivitamins.

we've got that 'hypothetical' cabin in the Sierras, and that 1k cache - 1000 rds of various ammunition, that is. I'm not leaving any firearms in a house that is empty 25 days / mo.
The ammo is there in case I forget to bring along any.
(and serves a secondary SHTF scenario)

out of my collection i would leave my remington 582 that i have a whopping $60 in it with the scope.
i would leave my rossi 971 .357 mag value $250
winchester m94 .357 $430
5k .22 lr= $100
3k +p 38 ammo =$65
2k .357 mag = $100

total $1005

the .22 will kill small birds, rabbits, squirrels

the .357 lever gun will take everything else up to and including medium sized deer.

if you are looking at my ammo cost and going ***? DUDE! i cast my own bullets and reload.

Rem 870 Express
Ruger 10/22
Marlin 45/70, good for bear & beast.

One thing to keep in mind about a safe sunk into the floor is water damage. I'm not sure how water resistent that safe would be.

However, I would go with a .22, 12guage, and some sort of semi auto rifle. And a few last things in the safe besides the weapons and ammo; some matches, compass and a map.
