Just saw the strangest thing at the local gun monger. PLASTIC CASED .223 ammunion. That's right and it even came in an assortment of colors.
***?? did I miss a memo on this. Wouldn't this just be plain dangerous not to mention that plastic tends to flex or change due to environmental conditions so how can it securely hold the bullet in place?
Ok so I am confused. I guess if it really is safe and works it is a good idea because it really reduces weight and seems to drop cost a bit.
Anybody braver then I ever try this stuff. I am just curious.

Chris, could we convince you to buy a box and take pics?
The brass only serves as a gasket during firing. I don't think it would cause any harm if the plastic is the right type.

I just looked at my shot gun ammo. The deer slugs are pretty big. There seems to be a whole lot of powder tucked in there. And lookkee here: they are made of plastic!

Well it works for shot gun shells. At one time these were all metal such as brass, aluminum and such. Paper works too...I actually like paper shotgun shells.
Active made a line of all plastic shotshells - including case head. Weird to see a primer set in plastic, but they worked and reloaded fine. Length of brass makes no difference on a shotshell and its velocity. Reloaded many buckshot, 1 1/4, 1/3/8, 1 1/2 oz loads in the low brass hulls...over and over again.
I have limited knowledge of this new offering, agree with Steve Smith , I guess it depends on composition of plastic and the other components in regard to pressures and heat.
Lets see a 12 ga target load produces ~ 8700 psi and up, depending on powder and all...170 gr 30-30 produces ~ 30,000 C.U.P. So those smarter than I will have to answer this.
Humm...I wonder if MEC will have parts to convert ...nevermind. :p

its made by natec and my experiece wasn't good. Were were gived a few boxes to demo at the range, so I pulled out my trusting Ar-180, 3 round ripped the casing right at the brass seam, powder and crap was everywhere in my rifle, not to mention the plastic case stuck in the chamber, accuracy was so so as well. Might run better on your guns.

I wouldn't have too many concerns about plastic-cased handgun or rifle ammunition. My only question is how they crimped the bullet. I'd imagine there's a heavy crimp in the bullet and a plastic lip that securely holds the slug in place. As long as that issue is solved, I don't see there being a problem unless you planned on firing it out of a rough chamber that might cause extraction problems (case head/plastic body separation).
I'm more than willing to give it a try when they hit the shelves around here.

I bought 2 boxes of this stuff, and I love it. I see no problem with how its crimped, as when I took apart one of the shells i couldn't even pull the bullet out with a pair of vice grips it was in so tight. In my ar accuracy was pretty good, and I had zero problems with the 20 rounds I fired of the stuff, even after running some Wolf .223 in it. I took pics of the stuff, just gotta wait to have it transfered over to one of my computers.

I believe the case is formed around the bullet and this is how it is held in securely.

Chris,
If you would have shown up at Oleg's birthday shoot, I would have let you fire some of mine through my new AR. For the record, it fed fine, although I only fired a few rounds. Next time we get together, I'll let you put some down range. That is, if you don't buy some and try it out before then.
