what do they look like w/out the comp? aparantly there is some kinda thread protector that replaces them? what does this look like?
how about posting some pics, im curious...
also, how long (in total) is the barrel w/comp? if its a 4'' barrel, is it total 5''? (ie, 1'' comp?)
thanks

I don't have a picture, but there is a nub of barrel about 1/4 inch inside the comp and the comp is held on with an allen type screw just under the muzzle. When not using the comp there is a false muzzle which is just slightly shorter than the comp. Not a whole lot of difference.

hmmm, ok. does the false muzzle have the same profile as the barrel does? (or the comp, just w/out the ports?)
does the allen screw act as a "set screw" of sorts or does it actually screw into the barrel (compared to just the pressure fit of a set screw)

Here ya go. The different ends are held in place by a through bolt, that screws into the barrel underlug area.

S&W 'aint the only one!~ Dan Wesson was doing it 10 years ago
...you might NEED one of these that has a larger expansion chamber and no allen screw. It has a cap threaded to the shroud that brings the muzzle back to the caliber and the barrel actually ends about 1.5 inches down the shroud.
here is a shot of the 4" compensated .44mag

My 6" .44mag comp has less felt recoil and muzzle jump than a friends 3" S&W .357. I also have a 6" compensated .357 and these two are my favorite fireaems.

SkaerE,
That looks like the 4" 629 V-Comp I recently bought used. Very nice gun, once I got my local smith to smooth the trigger. The comp does help quite a bit, but it is still a handful with full power magnum loads.

No. I ragged on it at first, but once the trigger was tuned, I like it. Need some better grips, though. The standard S&W ones look dull.

Just keep in mind that the comp attachment or the protector are just a little larger than the inside of the barrell. In other words, the bullet does not contact it, so it does not count in barrell length. This is important if you shoot IDPA and need a 4" barrell. In the same vain, the comp end can not be used in that venue either.
To tell the truth, it is hard to tell the difference with either of them on my 625 45acp. Either way it fun... Enjoy:cool:
