Truly BIG bore rifles!

During the upgrade I caught up with the goings on over at accurate reloading. With all the talk of big bores and such I got all fired up and decided to make a extreme rifle my next project.

Options range from .550 (28 gauge) to 12 bore.

The 600 (.620) is about the biggest that will fit in any production action and seems like a sane stopping place, but there may be an inexpensive 12 bore option. Any input is welcome as I am in the early planning stages.

The 14.5 JDJ is built on a 50 BMG case and is not exactly what I had in mind. I am looking for slightly more traditional bolt action, a large rifle to be sure, but something of Enfield size or less (except the 12 bore). Something in the 12 or 13 pound range and significantly handier than a 5' lond BMG. I don't like muzzlebrakes and I think I can get all the recoil I can handle from a smaller case than the BMG.

On J.D. Jones..
Having spoken to Mr. Jones and read his writings I find him to be a very effective salesman and little else.

Hmmm . . . you want a big bore that will run through a standard length action.

Suppose we simply expand the neck of a standard cartridge, and made a straight case.

Now we need some way to headspace it. That means either a rim or a belt, since it won't have a shoulder any more.

Rimmed cartridges don't feed well from standard box magazines. So we go with a belt.

We just invented the .458 Winchester Magnum!:D

what about .700 Nitro?

That's about as big a bore as I've ever seen.

Second on the accuratereloading BB. Be sure and check out the videos of the guys "shooting" the .577 Tyrannasaur. Those are worth a visit to the site just by themselves...:D :D

Rumor has it that CZ is coming out with a .505 (Gibbs?) within the next year or so. That would do, if you can wait.

Picked up sporterized Enfield at auction yesterday and man is it a mess! The action is ground and what was left of the markings were stippled out! It gets better! The barrel looks like a remington model 30, but the floorplate and magazine box a Winchester. The rest of the small parts a Remington and Eddystone. I don't guess it really matters that much.

The action will dictate the maximum size of the cartridge, and the Enfield is about as big as they come. The real question now is to use the weatherby 460 basic case or something bigger. I am leaning in the direction of a 550 on a weatherby case.

Bolt, bolt stop and bottom metal are all Winchester. The only Reimngton part is the magazine follower and the only E is on the floorplate latch. I'm hoping it's a Winchester.

Found magazine box for 460 Weatherby...
