Need some help with a Mauser extractor

I just bought a 1909 argentine (98 action) that won't extract diddly, so I want to know what to do. The extractor claw barely covers the boltface, so that looks like part of the problem, as it seems to have good tension.

Will any 98 (8mm) extractor work, or is there a difference for the 7.65 round?

An 8mm extractor should work fine.

Thanks.

You are feeding the round from the magazine and not just sticking it into the chamber and closing the bolt on it, right? If not, try one from the magazine.

Any way you do it, the round won't extract. Good thing I never fired it, then it would really be tough.

Anyone got a pic of the extractor and boltface?

The best advice is to remove the bolt and push a empty case into place under the extractor.

The extractor should hold the case in place, (it shouldn't slide or fall out) and the extractor claw area should have a sufficient amount of "grip" on the case rim that it will hold without slipping off.

If the case isn't held in place very well, or there isn't very much of the rim being held, replace the extractor.

It's not unusual to find old Mauser's with broken and resurfaced or altered extractor claws. Some people attempt to re-cut the claw so they can drop a round into the chamber and close the bolt over it.
This usually ruins the extractor.

It sounds like the extractor hook is broken. A standard Model 98 extractor should work OK; the 7.65 is slightly larger at the rim than the 8x57, but not enough to matter.

Nothing is broken, but it could very well be that Bubba (or Benito) decided to do some "fixin" on it with El Dremel. I base this on the fact that it looks clean and not jagged, but wouldn't even hold an empty case and only a tiny fraction of the hook even contacts the case head.

BTW, do these have to be fitted?

This should be a simple replacement without fitting. Check out this link.

Good luck!

I got a new extractor (DWM made, BTW) in the mail and it is obvious Bubba got to the old one with his dremel. It now extracts like a charm. Thanks.
