Ok so I was back in PA this weekend for mothers day and my dad and I had some free time to hit some of the local gun stores. One of them had a WASR for a decent price and it got me thinking. Does anyone know if you could buy a MD regulated rifle (IE: AK-47 clones, AR-15s) from an adjacent state and bring it back to MD legally? I know you can't for pistols but that's everywhere and I don't think I've ever heard for Maryland. So anyone know?

No, you cannot purchase a regulated firearm (generally, all modern handguns, AK-47s, AR-15s and the like) out of state directly. If you are a MD resident, regulated firearms must go thru a MD FFL or thru the State Police. If you are moving into MD, generally you do not have to "register" your guns (with certain exceptions, like full auto). "Registration" with respect to "regulated firearms" in MD means in the context of a transfer. Non-regulated firearms can be purchased directly in contiguous states (DE/VA/PA). This is a function of MD state law.

As far as I know federal law will allow you to buy any rifle in a neighboring state. MD law requires certain rifles and shotguns to go through the same process that pistols go through. It is possible that gun dealers in neighboring states but near the MD border are familiar with the law. Probably, if they'll sell them to you it is legal. However, when you get back here, you may or may not be. My guess, assuming the dealers will sell them to you, is that you would have to go to the state police barracks and register them in the same way that private transfers of handguns and regulated long-guns are handled in this state.

Your best bet is to talk to someone in the firearm division of the MD State Police. They should be able to give you a straight answer, with no guessing, on this issue.
