I'm planing on getting my daughter her first rifle soon. It will be a .22 bolt action or single shot, all depends on what fits her best and what she feels most comfortable with. My question is not what is the best to start her with but is it better to start with optical sights or iron. I see good and bad with both. I think that it will be eaiser to teach fundamentals (steady position, breathing, trigger control and safety) and build confidence to start with optical sights and then move to iron sights. Anyone have first hand knowledge? I learned on iron sights but that was all we had growing up.

Don't know how old your daughter is, or what she'll be using the rifle for, but when I got my first 22 my eyesight was good enough that I could shoot the rifle (with open sights) as well as it could shoot, and never had to worry about breaking anything if I dropped it. If she learns how to shoot with open, or at least iron sights, she'll develop a skill that will last her a lifetime, no matter what she's shooting.

One of the singleshot Chipmunks, Marlins, etc with iron sights works perfectly well for beginning shooters. I know many people who started on them.
