Can any one help i have just been given an old rifle it says RE in an oval circle on top of barrel it has 303 2.22" on barrel. It also has a flip up appeture or hole site. Also you load the magazine witch is internal from the top through the breech. The butt of rifle has got a steel sholder pad (if pad the right name lol)that has got a round hole in it with a hinged cover for the cleaning kit.I think it was a military rifle at one time but im not sure.I was left rifle wen old mate died and would love to know more. Also the serial number is 360106 if that helps im not sure THANKS EVERYONE OUT THERE

It's a bolt action I assume? The information you've given doesn't mean much to me, but the Lee-Enfield (SMLE) is a likely candidate if it was a British/Commonwealth service rifle.

Does it resemble any of the images on this page (http://www.webpages.uidaho.edu/~stratton/enphotos.htm)?

You didn't say if it is bolt action or lever action. With out a picture it is hard to tell what you have, but we might be able to narrow it down. From what you said and from your neck of the woods there are a few possibilities . The first is a MARTINI in .303 but that is a single shot, so it is out. The second is a bolt action in .303 ,which if it is a turn bolt ( ie. you lift the handle then pull it back) it could be one of many varieties of LEE ENFIELD, if it is a straight pull bolt action ( ie. you just grasp the handle and pull it straight back ) it could be any of a few models of ROSS rifle. If it is a lever action ( ie. like the cowboys used) in .303 it could a WINCHESTER MODEL 95, but the name WINCHESTER SHOULD HAVE BEEN STAMPED ON THE BARREL . So unless the barrel has been replaced it is probably either an Enfield or a Ross. It is possible it is any of many commercial rifles , but they usually are well marked with their trade marks and names. With a little more info we might be able to narrow it down further. GOOD LUCK.

Does it have a bolt handle with a dog leg shape (kind of a lightening bolt shape or backwards z shape)?
I'm guessing here, but it sounds more like a P 14 (pattern 14) made at Remingtons Eddystone arsenal.
This is the gun that was redesigned into the M1917 US Rifle when we entered WW 1.
