When you hear Legendary, what do you think of? I immediately think of the 1911 and BHP.

When I think "Legendary", I think of pistols so famous that even non shooters have heard of them.
Two immediately come to mind. Both can be called the "Colt .45". The first is the M1873 Single Action Army, the second is the M1911/M1911A1 automatic pistol.
"Colt .45" is so well entrenched in the popular vernacular that there's even a liquor brand named after it.
Also, amongst legendary pistols, you have the Luger P-08 "Parabellum" and the Desert Eagle. The latter was popularized in countless movies and video games due to its large size and cool appearance; it's fame is based more on aesthetics than actual performance or history.

I would respectfully add the S&W "Registered Magnum" (in .457 magnum), leading to all N Frame 27s, 28s, 627s, and so forth.

Both the big Colt .45s, as N/C and Thirdrail, and others correctly said. Also, the Luger and maybe the big S&W Magnums. That's about it.

How about the 4" skinny barrel Model 10 S&W, and the Mil&Pol versions?

You have to put the S&W Model 60 on the list.
This is where stainless steel (whether you like it or not) started. The fact that it sold for years at prices well above list is confirmation of its status...and the fact that it's still in the lineup after almost 40 years.

Sorry Peteer, but if someone's not a historically oriented gun person, they probably not even heard of the Sig 210, regardless of its quality and engineering. After all, it rarely got very far past Switzerland.

The voices in my head go along with the .45 Colt (1911 and Peacemaker) crowd. I'll add the Luger and the Broomhandle.
I like the BHP, but it doesn't hang in there like the abovementioned.

History: Luger, Colt .45 SAA and 1911
TVidiots: Deagle, PPK, S&W 629 .44mag
BHP just doesn't have a huge mythos, what eddie muphy carried it in Beverly Hills cop, big deal and nobody really cares about it's record with britain and the commonwealth.
Others were pretty significant, but none have/had the reputations of the above.
Hmmmmm...........Colt's lead the list. Too bad the company evolved into what it is today.:(

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. Anybody see the ad in American Rifleman that said "Why get a BLOCK when you can have a KAHR?" I loved the picture of the big block of knotty wood at the top of the ad.
Okay, seriously, I'd start off the list with the 1911, the BHP, the Registered Magnum and the Python. And the Single-Six and the Mark I. And the SAA. And the Dirty Harry gun. :)

I agree with all of the above. I would add the Colt DA 38 in Army or Navy form. TR carried one. I own one. The Colt/S&W 1917s in 45 ACP might be legendary.

Others I consider to be fairly tales.

Legendary pistols in order of appearance: ...
Colt 1911
Luger
BHP
You do realize the Luger came out before the 1911 right?
I like the BHP, but it doesn't hang in there like the abovementioned.
Not in the US no, but internationally the hipower is easily in the 1911s class. Of course pretty soon I might have to admit the Beretta 92 is legendary under the same criteria...

I knew the 9mm cartridge came out long before the .45ACP. Wasn't quite sure about the Luger pistol itsself.

Seems to me the BHP has been in production longer than any other hi-cap 9, has been used/copied by so many countries that it's hard to gauge just how many conflicts it's seen, and is still in service. Nothing to sneeze at.
I'd call that legendary. I would.

From days gone by, as a kid and teen and not knowing ALL the technical names and such, the following seemed to the stuff from which legends were made and played with in our neighborhood games.
When playing WAR you HAD to Have one of the following three:
Colt .45
.45 Auto
9MM Luger
If Cops and Robbers was the Game of the day it had to be one of these:
Snub Nose .38 Special
S&W .357 Magnum
.44 Magnum*
Our neighbor hood gang of school age warrior wannabes didn't know everything, but we knew THOSE guns.
Hmmm. You don't see kids playing WAR or Cops and Robbers outdoors much anymore, toting around their arsenals finest (even as a kid i had an old boy scout footlocker filled with toy guns to choose from... * tho the .44 Magnum didn't make the scene until Inspector Callahan made it a household word in the 70's). Nowadays, they sit on their chubby little butts indoors playing GTA and the like, which is probably better than having 10 - 15 kids running around the neighborhood and parks with plastic guns terrorizing today's horrified Moms. That can get a kid in a lot of trouble in todays world. But I digress.
As a much older kid, I'd still say those six qualify as legendary.

I knew the 9mm cartridge came out long before the .45ACP. Wasn't quite sure about the Luger pistol itsself. The first Luger was in 1900 and it was in 7.65 (.30 Luger). The 9mm Parabellum came along in 1902 and was first chambered in the Luger. The 9mm P is simply the 7.65 Luger without the bottleneck.
