What the best deal around on decent .223 ammo? Ammoman.com has 223 LAKE CITY XM193 55GR for $199-1000 rounds. Anything better out there?

The 40 round bulk packs at Walmart are only about $180/M by the time you do the math.

I haven't shot any of it yet, but it's as good as I've found, pricewise.

Natchez has $2.99 a box for American Eagle 55gr FMJBT.

So about $149.50 / 1000 rounds, plus figure about $20-$25 shipping.

Does anyone have any trouble with wolf .223 ejecting after about 50 rounds??

K=1,000
M=1,000,000

If you can get a million rounds off .223 for 180 bucks, please let me in on the secret. :what:

Nope, the Roman numeral for thousand is M, not K. Just like in french, thousand is "mille" while million is "million". Otherwise we wouldn't be living in MMIV would we?

SSSSSssssss! (Makes hex warding gestures with fingers :)). I've made my feelings known about that stuff elsewhere.

PW,
If we were using the metric system you would be correct.
But the 'M' is from the Roman Numeral system and denotes 1000.

C = 100
L = 50
X = 10
V = 5
I = 1

Walmart would probably be the cheapest option (though you have to pay tax) unless you pick up some Wolf at a gun show (which more than likely requires an admission fee).

Viable option:
Buy the Walmart bulk packs as you need them, saving all the while, until you can splurge on a couple thousand rounds at the next gunshow.:)

How do you nitpickers even know which numbering system Jame intended in the first place??? I think everyone knows what he meant. Geeez!!!!

Thanks Jame!

Found the .223 ammo in my local Wal-Mart this morning. New to me...

7.58 for the ammo, .38 cents for tax, total is 7.96 and box of 40. Ammo is made in Isreal, so is this the old Q3131A stuff?

Breakdown is 19.9 cents a round, total for a thousand is $199 including tax, no shipping. Not cheap, but it's eaiser to digest that 8 bucks a pop than the 200 or so for a case.

Thanks again! :)

Botach has Israeli (IMI) for $189/1200 rounds delivered.
http://botach.com/IMI/IMIAmmo/imiammunitions.htm

This is the same as Winchester Q3131a, which is top notch, Mil. Spec. ammo.
For target shooting, my Mini 14 loves Wolf, but you'll different opinions on it.

"Walmart would probably be the cheapest option (though you have to pay tax) unless you pick up some Wolf at a gun show (which more than likely requires an admission fee)."
If the admission fee is $50 you are still saving $30 a case. In reality the admission fee is $15, so you are saving what ? $65/case ? With no shipping or sales tax ?

I was just stating that admission to many gun shows requires an admission fee ($5-$30) while Walmart charges sales tax ($$ depends on how much you buy).

No problem, Al. I'm a cheap S.O.B., and a Purchasing Agent by profession. Good, cheap, and easy is the way I like 'em!
:D

I heard about it on AR15.com, and I'm pretty sure they said it was old Q3131A. The question that bears asking, is what Walmart will do when the stuff is gone.

Randy in Arizona, you summarized it correctly. I apologize for saying something before I figured out exactly jame meant. It is pretty standard to use metric system for most everything except the year at the end of movies. Y2K, Starting pay 17K, potential to earn 5K a month, etc. Read the classifieds sometime. So I (key word here) ASSUMED that he would be using metric. And we all know what happens when you assume...

My apologies to everyone.

Thanks for the input. Probably will order from Botach. NC sales tax is pretty hefty. Don't like Wolf ammo.

Are Walmart Winchester 40 rounders Q3131a mil-spec?

I just bought a couple of boxes for 7.99 each, will I see Q3131a on it somewhere? I'm not seeing it?

Bartholomew Roberts
May 21, 2004, 01:26 PM
If it is Q3131A, the white box will be labeled "5.56mm" instead of ".223" and the product code on the box will say "Q3131A".

blue86buick
May 21, 2004, 03:00 PM
On the box I purchased, it's called .223 Remington, and doesn't say Q3131A anywhere. However, it says "Made in Israel" on the back at the bottom, it has crimped primer pockets (circle crimped, not the 3-4 notches), and the cases are unpolished...you can still see the annealing discoloration.

WalMart is the only place I've seen those 40 round boxes. Gander Mountain by me had 50 round boxes for 8.49 or 9 bucks though, and I'll patronize them rather than the mothership anyday. :D

edit: Mr. Roberts reminded me....the 40 round packs DO have a winchester model number: USA223xxxx something or other. However, they DON'T have the "USA" circular logo on the front; there's a number sequence printed in grey/black there.

Bartholomew Roberts
May 21, 2004, 03:51 PM
If it is Winchester, there will be a product code on the box. Since it is .223 ammo, the product code will probably start with USA223 and a letter/number combo. It is SAAMI-spec ammo.

Metric: k = thousand; M = million
American units: M = Thousand.
It gets really complicated when your prof says he wants 400MMkg/yr production of a certain chemical (400 million kg/yr).

If it has a TZ on the case bottom its more than likely IMI, someone correct me if i'm wrong.

A friend of mine has close to 1000 rounds of wolf through his bushmaster with no hiccups. At about the 900 round mark, I smeared fp10 all over the bolt carrier when he wasn't looking. Other than that he ran it dry the whole time.

The stuff walmart sells is USA223R1. Theres a thread on ARFCOM about it.

Will walmart sell you a case if you have the cash and a good excuse? :D

"Will walmart sell you a case if you have the cash and a good excuse?"

Frontsight (a firearms training school) is located about 30 miles away from here. Many of their students call the local WalMart and have them set aside case lots of ammo for use in their courses. This saves them from having to fly with a bunch of ammo or transport a lot of ammo with them. And since this is Nevada, WalMart will be open no matter what time they pull into town.

My local Wally World said they could sell by the case, but there would be no discounts. A poster at the ARF site has the LC XM193 chron'ed at 300+
fps faster than the Israeli white box stuff...BUT the standard deviation was +/- 17 fps. That's pretty dang good quality control.
