“Assault Weapons” Debate Delayed Yet Again

The Massachusetts Senate was scheduled to take up debate on S.2282 again on Tuesday, May 4, 2004. Because of the confusion created by a host of amendments that would change the bill to a reform bill, the Senate opted to delay the debate again in order to study the proposed changes.

One of the major sticking points of the bill is a section that would go beyond what the federal law does. This section would ban the future sale of “pre-ban” and “post ban” semi-automatic “Assault Weapons” from a licensed dealer to anyone other than law enforcement. Many in the Senate questioned why it was necessary to readdress this issue. Those questions were only made more valid when the greatest supporter of these added restrictions wrote an editorial piece in the Boston Globe on Wednesday morning. Senator Jarrett T. Barrios wrote in his Globe Editorial:

“Extending the assault weapons ban and closing the pre-1994 loophole will not solve crime, nor will it keep all guns out of the hands of criminals. But it will aid law enforcement professionals in reducing the carnage caused by the most deadly weapons sold in Massachusetts .”

This statement, because of its contradictive nature, added to the confusion over the Senator’s insistence of the need to pass his language. He freely admits that his language will “not solve crime, nor will it keep all guns out of the hands of criminals”, but insists that it will be “reducing the carnage.”

It is obvious that there is no legitimate reason for holding a reforms bill when the lead sponsor of the section that is holding up progress has stated that his language serves no purpose.

Time to talk to your elected reps. out there I see. Something about an oath to protect and defend the entire Constitution, not just the politically expedient, or feel good portions.:cuss:

I am voting my little heart out this next year.

Letters have to be sent to many, I've got to get on that NOW.

Yes, let's ban Garands while we're at it. What's that you say? Even though they have a better range, fire a heavier bullet, and have "eeeevil" features they aren't ASSAULT WEAPONS? Fancy that. :fire: :fire: :fire:

E-mails sent.

To Kennedy:

Hello,

I would like to express my concern at the idea of a bill like S.2282. There is simply no reason to have such a widespread ban on cosmetic features. A rifle that has black metal or plastic parts may look scarier than another rifle, but how does that make it deadlier or more dangerous?

If you'd like to have my vote in coming elections, I would like you to fight for the little guy on this. The defense of my country and my home is paramount, and any law that restricts that feels is a direct attack on America, my town, and my state.

Thank you for your time.

You say that many children are killed by firearms every year, but you fail to mention that over two million crimes are stopped each and every year due to defense being possible.

If you'd like to have my vote in coming elections, I would like you to fight for the little guy on this. The defense of my country and my home is paramount, and any law that restricts that feels is a direct attack on my safety, my wellbeing, and my country.

Don't tread on me.

(psst, Third Rail, they are talking about the State Senate ;) )

As much as I hate the idea of this, I'm glad to see that it is becoming a state's rights issue rather than a global federal mandate. It would be nice if all the laws were heading in that direction. That way the bliss ninnies could live in thier own little world & we could live in ours (& my blood pressure would go down significantly :D ).
