“Assault Weapons” Debate Delayed Yet Again
The Massachusetts Senate was scheduled to take up debate on S.2282 again on Tuesday, May 4, 2004. Because of the confusion created by a host of amendments that would change the bill to a reform bill, the Senate opted to delay the debate again in order to study the proposed changes.
One of the major sticking points of the bill is a section that would go beyond what the federal law does. This section would ban the future sale of “pre-ban” and “post ban” semi-automatic “Assault Weapons” from a licensed dealer to anyone other than law enforcement. Many in the Senate questioned why it was necessary to readdress this issue. Those questions were only made more valid when the greatest supporter of these added restrictions wrote an editorial piece in the Boston Globe on Wednesday morning. Senator Jarrett T. Barrios wrote in his Globe Editorial:
“Extending the assault weapons ban and closing the pre-1994 loophole will not solve crime, nor will it keep all guns out of the hands of criminals. But it will aid law enforcement professionals in reducing the carnage caused by the most deadly weapons sold in Massachusetts .”
This statement, because of its contradictive nature, added to the confusion over the Senator’s insistence of the need to pass his language. He freely admits that his language will “not solve crime, nor will it keep all guns out of the hands of criminals”, but insists that it will be “reducing the carnage.”
It is obvious that there is no legitimate reason for holding a reforms bill when the lead sponsor of the section that is holding up progress has stated that his language serves no purpose.
