Need even more help....

I know, I know, I am so indecisive.

As I mentioned a few days ago, I have been eyeing a Cetme or an AK clone to be my birthday/anniversary gift from my wife :D .

We are going to a bigger store this weekend, hoping to find something that catches my eye, and is in the right condition, at the right price.

But I am realizing that there are many more choices available to me than I first realized. I would really like something along the lines of an EBR, although, to be honest, I will never really need it for serious social issues. I am not a cop, I don't do 3 gun (might be fun though), and I am no low-drag-high-speed mall ninja. I just want something fun to shoot before they get banned. When I was a teen I had enough to purchase a pre-ban AR, plus an AK, but I was stupid and didn't take the opportunity, and I don't want to pass it up again.

Kel Tec Su16 would be at the high end of my price range, but would probably be doable. Looks kinda plasticy, but I have heard good things, and it takes AR mags which would be very cool. I would love to have something in .223/5.56, and I know Kel Tec has great customer service in case something goes wrong.

Saiga .223/7.62x39/.308. These are all pretty cool. The .308 version would be nice if i added the 4 US parts (no pistol grip) and if hi-caps became available after sept 13th. I have heard that they are pretty accurate too, someone on here mentioned 2-2 1/2 moa even with russian ammo. Nice.

Ofcourse, if I did that, I wouldn't be happy until it was converted to an AK103, and that would bring the cost at least up to $600, and I don't think I can afford that. :(

Or I could just get a WASR-10 or SAR-1 (leaning towards WASR-10) for fairly cheap, a bunch of hi-caps, and just be happy with that. Probably would get it recrowned, and new furniture too.

If I could find a decent M1 Garand or USGA M1 carbine I would probably jump at that too. Probably won't happen though, and I can't really do CMP, because the ranges where the CMP competitions take place are too $$$ for me to join.

I have also though about forgoing the evil assault rifle, and instead getting a good accurate rifle. I know wally world has Rem 700s for ~$400 or so, or I could get a NEF survivor in .223 and a Leupold rifleman scope for my budget. But it has a slower twist than I would want (1 in 12).

I have also thought about getting a shorter enfield. I used to have a no1 mkIII*, but it was too heavy, and the sights sucked. I shot a friends no 4 or no 5 and I really liked it, although, .303 is harder to find good ammo in.

A mini-14 would be great, if they were actually accurate, and cheaper, and mags were cheaper too. But other than that, it would be my ideal rifle (ignoring Bill Ruger's politics). I love the feel of it, and I think its a great idea, just, as others have said, poor execution.

So I need some help deciding what direction to go in. Right now my only rifle is an SKS. I traded my swede M96 and my no1 mk III* for it (I know, a lot for an SKS, but the other rifles were in bad shape when I got them, and the SKS is pristine).

Thanks again.

My prime suggestion right now would be SAR1 .... while you can. Even if you move on to something in .223/5.56 ... you'll not IMO regret having the AK ... no gun enthusiast should be without one! :) Cheap ammo too.

Lots of other possibilities but .. set sights for now on the AK .. only my 0.02 tho.

I know wally world has Rem 700s for ~$400 or so
could those be the 710 models?

if so, big difference.;)

nipprdog,

Could be, in which case I wouldn't want it, would go with a savage instead. I just heard on another board that it was the 700 going for $400 at wally world. Haven't checked for myself.

And I should have mentioned (yes there is more, there is always more with me), I am still considering a Cetme, if I can find someplace that stocks more than one.

I went to my local shop last Saturday, walked in, saw what I wanted. Cetme with muzzle brake, refinished wood, but going for $499. I asked the clerk what he wanted for a new one, and he told me they were in the high $500 range. I politly told him that aimsurplus has them for $289, and he responded, "sure, but you can't by them for that price." We went back and forth regarding how I could have a FFL order it for me, and finally the guy went and looked at his CDNN catalog, and sure enough, $289. So price for me would be $352 which I was willing to do.

Than he tells me that the Cetme that he had (used), also had 8 20rn mags, and I could have it for $400. I was thinking sweet deal, my wife and I left the store to discuss it, planning on going back, but I was concerned about one thing, I think it had a ground bolt. :banghead: Other wise I would buy it up in a second, and be happy.

Oh well.

No. Wally World sells ADLs for ~$400 and BDLs for ~$500. Check their special order catalog if you don't believe me. ;)

Remember, if you're on a budget, that 7.62 Soviet is much, much cheaper than .308 milsurp.
