American Idol...maybe we deserve what we get

Maybe we can not be trusted.
Maybe we are a nation of racists.
Maybe we are to stupid to be trusted with the awsome weight of freedom.

America voted a SUPER talented black woman off a show and kept a pretty white girl with not even a fraction of the talent. This what Americans did.

For the record I am white and as right wing as they come. But I know talent when I hear it. I know what is right and what is wrong.

I am ashamed first that I watched that show....and second that I care about the outcome. But I do.

Maybe if fewer people were concerned with American Idol, Friends, Fraiser, sports, etc. and more were concerned with the issues of the day, education, and the political process, we wouldn't be in the many fixes we're in now.

Maybe we are a nation of racists.

Considering a black man won last year, I find this to be highly unlikely.

I don't watch it but my wife was ranting about it a few minutes ago.

How is it racism when you have two african-americans, a filipina from Hawai'i and a Native American gal from the Carolinas?

Sounds like a split vote between the two black divas more than any overt racism.

That and the majority of people voting wouldn't know talent if it walked up and kicked them in their privates.:what:

This is definitely an important issue for THR. Maybe the mods could move this thread permanently to the top.

A buddy of mine told me about it tonight. It seems it's a recurring them that the better talent is voted off each week, kind of like a slap at the judges. I don't watch it and don't really care. I sure as hell wouldn't categorize the US a nation of racists because of it, though.

If you think about it, most of us who spend so much time online at THR could probably add a whole new richer dimension to our lives, if we'd log off and watch shows like American Idol when they're on.

Or not! :neener:

Whats American Idol ??Ditto.

We unhooked our TV 5 years ago. Haven't looked back since. On the rare occasions I happen to see TV elsewhere, I am amazed that people actually can stand watching it.

If you are concerned about what happens on "American Idolatry", you need to go to the range more often.

Clear out a few cobwebs, it will.

America voted a SUPER talented black woman off a show and kept a pretty white girl with not even a fraction of the talent. Jasmine, the one who has been doing bad, is not white. She's Filipino-Hawaiian. Maybe we are to stupid to be trusted with the awsome weight of freedom.I suspect that the people who actually vote (versus watch) are teens (I know plenty of adults who watch, but none take the trouble to vote).

I wouldn't get upset about the results of a teen popularity contest.

When my son hit the 1st grade we turned off the TV during the week and it's been off ever sense.

We watch lots of movies on the weekend but in general I think TV is the pap of the masses and except for the History Channel and A&E it's mostly about ignorant, meaninglessness.

The major nets are .......I can't use that kind of language on THR.

I watch it with my wife. Americans like underdogs; it's a popularity contest. Not racist; just people voting for what they like, as a previous poster said, probably a lot of teeny-boppers voting. For the record, we never vote, just watch. I do think they shouldn't make the other girls feel bad because they weren't voted off. It's just sad that the knee jerk reaction is that results must be racist. It has prevented me from watching "Enterprise" until the Sunday evening re-broadcast.

I would be discouraged to see TV shows and movie plots be considered relevant to THR L&P. I think real life should be a criteria. Yeah, I can skip over anything, but what is considered "on topic"? Where is the remotest of connection with guns?

It takes more than one forum to discuss everything on ones mind. I will bet you that there are dozens of discussion groups focused on that show.

I do not watch reality shows its garbage, the idea it seems to be is to insult people, heck most of us can go to work and get that each day.

Now for the voting on American idol, suppose folks are voting on looks not
talent, mind you, I don't watch.:D

While I watched, with my 1911 beside me (to try to mention guns somewhere in this thread), I was stunned to see Latoya voted off last night. However, I don't think it had anything to do with race. The final four were 2 African Americans, 1 Hawaiian, and 1 white girl. Someone had to be voted off, and while Latoya was better than Jasmine, I think we can all agree that its really just a popularity contest anyway. Anyone remember no-talent John Stevens? He stayed on the show long past his time.
Especially in this forum, I was surprised to see someone buying into the media's take on the subject of racism. Never believe what the media tells you. If we did that, we would all think guns are evil. :p

Thats the way I see it.

I dont even watch it. I dont know who the contestants are, I really dont care. I dont know who wins untill I hear them on the radio and the DJ says something before playing the song.
