Is your Kel-Tec P-11 reliable and durable enough to use as a primary carry gun?

The P-11, P-40 & P-357 are all on the same frame, with different barrel/slide configurations.

I have the P-357.

At only 21.9 oz. fully loaded, it's a handfull to shoot. And, it's been flawless.

Most of the shooters who demean the lowly Kel Tec have never actually handled one...or have handled one poorly - the P-40 & P-357 will not tolerate "limp-wristing.

I've owned two P-11s and never had any kind of problem with either one of them.

The P-11 has been around long enough that Kel-Tec has worked out all of the bugs.

My P11 was a very good shooting gun. I don't ever remember having any problems with it. The biggest problem was me! I couldn't get the hang of that long trigger pull. I eventually sold it to a buddy and used the money to buy my Steyr S40.

I think I've owned 3 or 4 of these over the past few years and every one was accurate (relatively speaking) and reliable.

Ditto the last couple of responses. Mine was accurate and reliable.

But I took mine to one of our monthly IDPA matches and found that, in that context, I could shoot it accurately, or I could shoot it quickly, but had a hard time doing both...

Truthfully, I did well with it after the first couple of shots, getting reacquainted with the trigger. But straight out of the holster on the first strings -- "the horror!" Since it was a CCW, and the first stages at an IDPA match might be a lot like what I'd have to do in REAL LIFE, I sold it and found something else.

But I acknowledge that the problem was MINE, and not the gun's...

Now that Blackhawk has figured out how to improve the trigger, I may get another, one of these days... Or a P3AT.

All have worked well with Win White Box FMJ, and, at least, Fed HydraShok. At least two were fine with Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. - -Didn't try it in the others.

100% reliable. In fact, I thought I'd want a chrome one, but I'd just hate to get rid of my little P11 because I love it so much.

Yes!

Even my 40 S&W conversion has been reliable with the 9mm magazines.
40 is a handfull though.:)

Mine won't feed two rounds consecutively.
I have sent it back to the factory either two or three times for other problems. Now, since the last time I got it back it won't feed at all. I gave up on it. I am tired of playing with it.

KT doesn't actually call it a P-357, it is a P-11 with the .357 conversion kit - slide, barrel, magazine and recoil springs.

I don't "get rid of" guns. Maybe someday I will get my interest back in the gun and send it back yet again. I am rapidly approaching the cost of the gun in shipping. In the mean time, I occasionally use it to chrono loads out of the short barrel. I got on a kick some time back trying to see the difference in velocity for different powders in different barrel lengths. I have 9mms as short as the P11 and up to 16" carbines, so the P11 is serving some purpose to me.

Oh and my P32 doesn't run well either. It doesn't malfunciton like the P11, but every 10 or 20 rounds I get a malfunction. It is surprisingly accurate though.

Mine was great until about 2000 rounds in. Ejector broke. Replaced it and still carry it. I've broken one thing or another on just about all my guns.

Yes.

I remember a few FTEs a coupla years ago, all with Wolf 9mm ammo. No problems since then.

My P-11 is my primary carry gun.

Yes the trigger is long, but so is a revolver when shooting DA:p

BTW, 100% reliable in my hands with about 300 rds down the tube.

Couple of malf when my small wife shot it, but she was limpwristing it i'm guessing.

Mine's outfitted with a Hogue Handall jr, and the grip extension base plate, and it's a pussycat to shoot.

My P-11 was a jamomatic when I first got it. KT replaced barrel and recoil spring and now after some more break-in it is reliable, even with Blazer ammo and Smith and Wesson hi-cap mags.

About 500 rounds. No problems except 2 FTE with the aluminum Blazers I used the last time out.

My P-11 was 100% reliable -- right up until the time it physically broke. :cuss:

After the third time it broke, (total of around 1,000 rds thru it) Kel Tec completely replaced it with a brand new gun with it's old SN. It's now trading stock. If I can carry a P-11, I can carry my Taurus PT-145, which doesn't break and has a whale of a lot better trigger pull.

I never could get the P-40 conversion kit to feed. They gave me different mags, and I took it to the factory twice, but they never got it to feed a magazine full. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: And NO! I wasn't limp-wristing it. The fact that they no longer make the P-40 should be your first clue about its reliability. :fire:

If it's all you can afford, the P-11 (especially one of the newer ones) will be better than nothing. But IMHO, you should carry it a lot and shoot it sparingly.

Working on 1200 rds. through my hard chromed P-11. No malfs after the first 100 break-in rounds.

Feeds everything 100% so far. Haven't tried aftermarket mags though, as I bought two spares from the factory.

The grip's a bit boxy, and the trigger pull takes some practice to get used to. But for about $240 OTD, it's hard to beat, IMHO.

I own a Kel-tec P40. It had to make a trip back to the factory, but it is reliable, now.

I think the P11 is the way to go, however. The P40 kicks like a mule with .40S&W.

Need to make sure you have absolutely the correct magazines.

yes...

I am rapidly approaching the cost of the gun in shipping.
you can legaly ship it to the factory using UPS for under $10:
http://www.1bad69.com/keltec/shipping.htm

Badger Arms
May 18, 2004, 04:40 PM
If UPS knows about it, they will make you ship it Next Day Air. UPS and FedEx policy is that handguns must be shipped overnight. The stated reason for this is because they are afraid of theft or the 'possession' of the package containing guns by a prohibited driver. Hmmm, so they hire Felons and Wife Beaters, eh? What kind of companies are these?

Badger Arms
May 18, 2004, 05:09 PM
BTW, the author of that site overlooks one important thing about shipping by a common carrier. If you violate their policy and the gun is damaged, they don't have to pay your insurance because you failed to declare. I have only made one claim against FedEx in my time for a ruined Ithaca, but I'd hate to not be able to make a claim. Of course, I'm an FFL so I ship USPS... :)

May 18, 2004, 05:20 PM
Badger,
PLEASE dont misinterpret this question...But does FFL stand for Federal Football League??:D j/k

I thought that you didn't have to declare what you were shipping unless it was USPS....Am I that off in my thinking?? Has the GLUE finally destroyed the best looking holster maker from NC?? INQUIRING minds wanna know :neener:

The CHIMERA is coming....Eventually:rolleyes:

Walt Sherrill

FFL = Federal Firearms Licensee.

And the comment above is correct: if you don't use one of the premium services, UPS or FedEx has no obligation to pay for your loss if the gun is lost. And if it doesn't go by the premium (overnight, etc.) service, there's more than a good chance it WILL disappear. That's the problem they were having in the first place.

Ship it the cheapest way you can, but do it within the Common Carrier's tariff requirements.

AWWW Walt I was just teasing Badger....Yea I figure that's why they do it...Which is cheaper...UPS or Fedex??
