I was just given an old shotgun for helping someone move to a different house. The shotgun is in fairly good condition but seems a little odd. There is a choke/muzzle brake(?) that is threaded in the end of the barrel. There are also some markings that lead me to believe it was a military shotgun. Serial # is 16XXX.

If anyone has any info on the Stevens and when they were made and if they were used in service - I would appreciate it.

The Stevens 620 was indeed used as a military gun and the US markings indicated that this is one of them. I am not sure wether the compensator is original to these guns or not.

The model 620 and earlier 520 were made off Browning patents and were a pretty good weapon.

ps: One reference I found has the US buying just over 12,000 model 620's in the first half of the 1940's. The mark below the P is refered to as the flaming bomb . These were made for the US in trench gun style (bayonet lug and heat shield), riot style , and with full length barrels for training.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a 620 to me. Never seen one before with a compensator. Probably added after military service. Decent shotgun.
