ok ok, my particular angst goes something like this..

A while back, I had the Springfield Armory Custom Shop install some Novak 3-Dot Low mounts on my 1911... This was a few years ago.. Im now looking to change out the front sight with a plain non-dotted one because Im no longer interested in having it shoot low at 15 yards.. SO.. I emailed SA about the dovetail dimension so that I could go shop like a little girl for a new front sight. A very nice lady, Deb, emails me back the dimension.

"standard front sight dimension for pistol XXXXX is 330 x 60"

"nutts" i say (not to Deb but myself)... ive been looking at brownells, novak's, heine's, and dawson's webpages and these numbers dont match!!... Since I have NO clear idea what these numbers mean, I dont know what I can get to fit this dang dovetail. What I do "know" is that the dimensions that Novak, Heine, et al. list are somewhat close to my numbers..but my momma didnt raise a complete fool- close is close, but that doesnt mean it's right...

Ok, I know this DOES sound so foolish, but if I dont ask, then I'll probably never find out... Exactly what do these numbers correspond to? I know there's a 3rd number usually listed for front sight dovetail dimensions, but as I said, I am really not sure what all the numbers represent.

So....my question(s) and YOUR ANSWER(s) time (please !!) :)

(1) what do the numbers represent ?

(2) what sight COULD I purchase (ie. novak, heine, brown... etc etc) to fit this dovetail? Minor fitting is fine... Im generally pretty good about filing/grinding/chewing up metal so no REAL worries!! seriously, it's just my beater gun and it's relatively cheap to turn a frontsight into little metal particles.

Please..participation on your part is "ESSENTIAL".. otherwise I'll have to call and ask.. im scared and, moreoever, too cheap to spend that $.10 cents on a phone call to the folks in GenXesseseseo, Illinois.

Ill even give out a pre-thanks to entice anyone to pipe up and help me out.. (here it is)

"Thanks!"

The most common dovetails are .330 by 65 degrees and .300 by 60 degrees. Maybe Springfield will sell you a sight blade. Alternately, the nice lady may have given you a wrong dimension. As a last resort, you could drive the blade out, measure it, sit down with the Brownells catalog, and knock yourself out.:D
