A loaded gun goes off in the Hillsboro High School gym during a basketball game.

It happened Thursday night as the game between Hillsboro High and Pearl Cohn High was wrapping up. Though many in the crowd were unnerved by the incident, the only person injured was a 17-year-old Pearl Cohn student, who reportedly shot himself.

"I don't know him to carry a gun."

Thursday night, Angela Bridges rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center after learning her oldest son, Montario Depriest, had a serious gunshot wound to his thigh.

"He was in pain. He was real scared."

The mother of three told News 2, the 17-year-old Pearl Cohn senior had lost a lot of blood and went quickly to surgery to repair a damaged artery in his leg.

"A lot of things were going on in my mind at the time. I don't know why he had a gun on school property."

Authorities told News 2, Depriest shot himself with his own gun - a 9mm - and it happened Thursday night in the Hillsboro High School gym during a basketball game with Pearl Cohn.

According to witnesses, the young man was seated in the stands and there was about a minute to go in the game. The speculation is he had a gun in his waistband. It may have begun to slip down his leg, and when he went to catch it, the gun may have gone off.

"It was kind of a pop sound."

"Everything was in chaos."

"People started screaming, run, run."

"It was scary. Really random."

"He was bleeding from the leg."

Medical trainers from Vanderbilt and Baptist hospitals rushed to the badly bleeding teenager.

"They immediately ran across the floor into the stands and started applying direct pressure to the young man," said Asst. Principal Alvin Jones.

Thankfully, no one but Depriest was injured in the unusual incident.

"No, I've never seen anything like that."

So why did Montario Depriest have a loaded 9mm in a crowded school gym? His mother said he was afraid of someone.

"Police said he said he had the gun and was using it for protection. Someone was after him. I don't know."

After four hours of surgery, we're told that Montario Depriest is in stable condition at Vanderbilt. We're also told when he gets out of the hospital, he faces a number of charges, and he has all ready been expelled from school under the zero tolerance policy.

There is a basketball game Friday night at Hillsboro High School, and we're told there will be an increase in security.

yeah, i quickly bought an IWB holster after my gun slipped down my backside and i'm trying to grab it. musta looked real funny, my hands grasping at my rear end and down the back of my thighs.
thankfully though, i was smart enough to not chamber a round when i carried like that.

The gun should have gone off while pointing the muzzle at the genitals - at least this way, that guy wouldn't be able to pass on his genes concerning bad carry pratices...:p

Ahhh...

The joys of mexican carry..

Quick, someone who's a holster maker make him into the poster child..

I had an instructor tell me, "If the gun starts to slip, let it fall, don't try to grab it or else you might accidentally pull the trigger"

How true how true..

I Mexican carry my Glock 27. I take it with me when I go to buy blue jeans. If they don't hold it snuggly, I don't get that size. I would guess his jeans were too big for him. Ah too bad.
