MD Stores Shelves Full Again?

With the approval of the new internal/non-integral locks for handguns in MD, the fellas over at On Target were saying that they are going to be getting some previously unavailable guns in for stock.
They had a Bersa .45 over there the other day for $350.00. According to Spot77, they are also planning on getting Kimbers, Glocks, Paras and some other things....hopefully SIGs as well.
JeepDriver.....any word from up Continental way?

Guess I'm gonna have to change my handle from Cliff to Needabiggersafe. Oops, can't do that, it's already taken.:D Good news to hear. What about the prices dropping a bit now that we might be getting more supply.

And I just got my Florida permit! (I plan to spend a LOT of time in Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania, probably two-three weekends a month after Graduation (8 days from today!), since I've got family in the first and third and friends in #2).
All the more excuse to buy that XD40 I want, along with the holster, mags and lots of ammo & range time.

I don't want to be "The stick in the mud" here, but I don't remember hearing the spent casing requiremnt being lifted. Granted, the lock was a big deal, but if the manufacturers aren't sending a spent case, we've gained nothing. :banghead:
Kharn
May 21, 2004, 10:11 AM
Most manufacturers are including spent casings. If not, you could probably call the factory directly to work something out, arent all guns test-fired before they get shipped out?

This is great news. Guns will still be more expensive, but at least not unavailable.

May 21, 2004, 10:15 AM
Well, the way I understand things work, is that the manufacturer sells to distributors and they in turn sell to dealers. Only a very small number of states require a spent case so why would the manufacturer take the time and expense to include the case?
MrPink
May 21, 2004, 10:51 AM
Well, S&W includes a fired case with ALL guns they ship. They even give you a complementary integral lock on the revolvers :)

I hope that all of this is true and that once again we will hace a decent selection of guns to choose from. Sadly, the skeptic in me says that the MSP and our gun-grabing friends in the legislature will find a way to rain on our parade. I hope I'm wrong...

A victory like this in gun hating MD would be great news for the whole country especially after the defeat of the state assault weapons ban.

I believe it is the firearms board in Maryland that has allowed the new lock to be acceptable. They are the ones who decide whether a gun can be sold in the State. But what they say does become law. The Legislature has to vote to overturn the law made by the Board, making it a tad more difficult than to pass a law. The Board and only the Board can pass firearms laws, sometimes under great pressure and resolutions from the Governor and Legislature. Ohhhh. That's why we vote !!!!
Hi to the folks at On Target. It's been too long.

We have Beretta's and Glocks in stock right now. Springfirld XD's and plenty of Ruger MKII's are in bound. Sig is waiting for the letter from the state before they will sell to MD. I'm pushing for some CZ's and Kimbers right now.
BTW: I know Continental has been know for high prices in the past but as of June 1 we are droping our retail prices and are going to be trying to sell as many guns as possible. The owner wants a high volume of sales. So check us out.

MSP is on our side. No doubt about it.
Jeepdriver: That's great news....I really like the people I've dealt with at Continental and White Marsh, but I've always stayed away at purchase time cuz' the prices weren't even competitive. I've always like the XD's and I've been toying around with a few ways to afford a nice 1911.
According to the folks at On Target MOST manufacturers WILL play ball with the spent casing law. It's a cheap tradeoff to open up the entire Maryland market again. So what if it adds even $3 (and I think that's WAY overestimated) to the price of the gun?
Two good steps for us in Maryland this year.
Pray for Ehrlich's re-election......

Spot77,
I like White Marsh as well and Skip is perhaps the best person to deal with since the others, while nice, can appear a bit standoffish at times - if you know what I mean. I haven't been to Continental as yet, but after reading JeepDriver's mention of lowered (or so-to-be) prices I may indeed pay them a visit next month to see for myself.
On Target is another story entirely. I've only bought one gun there, and that was well over four years ago. Since then their stock has become scant and worse still their transfer fees have risen to the level of pure piracy - $110 last time I checked, and that doesn't even cover your background fee! You'd think that with the money they make on the range they'd be a tad more lenient with their fees but apparently their policy is similar to many gasoline stations - gouge while the getting is good. Also, I've stood looking into cases for well over ten minutes without someone asking if I needed any help. Sure, there are some helpful and friendly employees there, but then again there are some who appear as though they'd rather be someplace else and that's a definite turn-off.
I'll shoot there, but I won't buy there.

one45auto,
Sorry you felt like On Target wasn't happening for you when you were shopping. I guess I've been fortunate when shopping there as I've had the opposite experience. I've bought 3 guns there and, with the exception of one individual, I've always gotten great service.
Regarding the transfer fee...outrageous yes....but what it boils down to is that they just don't really want to do transfers. Too much trouble (their words) for what amounts to too little return. Not the fault of the folks at the counter....the owner just doesn't want to go that direction.
JeepDriver,
Let us know if the CZs pan out for Continental.....that CZ97 seems to be calling me, and I bet my wife would appreciate one of those Kimbers

Might just have to check out White Marsh/Continental to look for my Alabama CCW gun! (Sigh, if only I hadn't traded my S&W Model 60 for that Ruger P97!) Can't imagine I would get much in trade for a used P97 (double sigh).
I can't believe I am actually going to be allowed to carry, its such a foreign concept here.....

I've always had good service at On Target, very businesslike (not surly) when I have needed it. But Wow, those prices just did not make sense, even if I wanted to a gun there. Too many other ways to obtain one. But I like the facilities.

Never saw a Colt there however.

I've not found their prices to be out of line from other stores here in MD....in fact two of the guns that I bought there were much cheaper than other places in the state. Bottom line is that ALL guns are too expensive here compared to the United States.
That businesslike demeanor that you refer to may be a result of a certain amount of caution that comes about from the area that they are in:confused:

Judging by what I've seen elsewhere I'd have to agree with that.
Not that I think the shops are gouging us, though, its just the cost of business in a gun unfriendly state.

On Target has to be one of the worst gun shops I have ever been in!
First issue I had when I got here was I wanted to buy a year membership. However, they have no allowance if you get deployed (which I did). You're just out your membership fees. Even AT&T cellular was better!!!! I didn't expect them to bend over backwards but a gun shop usually is willing to work with the military.
Second issue:
I was in there the other day and wanted to buy 2 rifles that they had.
They were consignment pieces. I asked if the seller would cut me a deal on the pair. Was told that they won't "bother" their sellers.
Was told that since I'm military I also have to give them a copy of my lease. First time I have ever been told that, but OK, I wanted the guns.
So I got the lease.
Had my orders and my lease now. Went back to shop with paperwork in hand. Had a younger guy show me the guns again, he then proceeded to throw the accessories around a bit and tore the box up trying to wedge them back into the box. He did all this while acting like he was doing me a HUGE favor.
The kicker then was that I was told I had to do a seperate form for each gun and give 2 copies of the paperwork. The kind young man told me there was a copying machine down the street at the 7-11 that I could use.
That was it for me. You can't be bothered to make a copy to bring in several hundred $$$'s? My money and I walked out the door and I don't think I will ever return.
Their concept of "customer service" is mindnumbing
:fire:
I have talked with many other people in the area and they have similar stories of stupid stuff going on there. I'm amazed they can stay in business at all.

Oh, and to avoid being the guy with a problem and no solution.
Accurate Pawn in Elkridge seems to be a good option. No range and the place doesn't look like much. However, the guy knows his stuff, is willing to order anything you want, and had the best price I have seen on a Storm in the area.
I have no interest or connection to the place. Just took me a long time to find a good shop in the area and I thought I would pass it along.
Plus it's near the Harley dealership if you have money to burn:D

Ohen: I like Accurate Pawn too....I bought a used Marlin .22lr from them a few months ago. You're right - they'll order anything AND cut you a good deal.
Shame about your experience at OT. I know EXACTLY which person you dealt with there; he's a real pompous ass. I usually deal with Ed; he's friendly, knowledgable, and goes out of his way to help you.
Greyhound: If you want to sell that P97 let me know - depending on the money situation at the time, I might be able to take that off your hands.

This locking device was approved as an internal lock by the handgun review board (no law change needed, as the handgun review board decides whats legal and whats not):

It can be fitted to any size firearm, so now all handguns should be legal for sale in MD.

Ohen Cepel,
Sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience with On Target. I agree with Spot77 that you should really give them a second chance by talking to Ed. I can tell you personally that he has gone way beyond the call of duty to help me in my search for a 1911 and I will almost certainly get it there once they start putting the Kimbers back on the shelf.
The problem may be that the guys working the floor aren't given a great deal of give and take when it comes to the prices and so forth. I get the feeling that whoever owns the place makes the rules and then goes home.......of all the times I've been in there in the last 18 months, I've never seen the owner.
As far as the poor service hoisted upon you by the JIQ (jerk in question), don't take any offense.....he's like that all of the time and I purposely avoid going there when he's on his shift. Ed and Jay are the guys to talk to if you have concerns or questions.
BTW if you REALLY want the worst gun shops in MD, PM me and I'll tell you what bad really means.......

And also, what shop in the White Marsh area is everybody talking about?
It's not in the White Marsh area. The Shop is called White Marsh Arms and is located in Reisterstown. The kept the White Marsh name because that's the name the usedwhen they only sold at gun shows before they bought a store front. The same people own both Continental Arms and White Marsh Arms.
Let us know if the CZs pan out for Continental.....that CZ97 seems to be calling me, and I bet my wife would appreciate one of those Kimbers
I'll keep you inmind, I'm going to be checking into the cost of CZ's this week. Since Sig isn't selling to MD just yet, I think I'm gonna order me a 85;) And when you're ready for the Kimber let me know and I'll order what ever model you want.

Well, traditionally, there would be NO reason at all to go there....I can't even tolerate going there to use the range.
It's been so long since I've been there, I guess I was hoping somebody would tell me that they've changed. They're SO CLOSE to my house, and they're right behind Wal Mart (get ammo, go shoot!)

Is the MD State Police Handgun Roster & its review board still in place? I never quite figured out what they did, but I was told by someone at a shop that the Kel-tec P32 was denied placement on the list because they considered it a 'saturday night special' and wouldn't be allowed for sale in the state. Any truth to this?

The owners are CPO's and lawyers who set up the place as a place to shoot, and as a place to put money. They do maintain tight control over priceing and procedures, though they are almost never, ever there. This from those that work there. It does help to explain things.
