Soldering a sight on ???

I am planning on shortening a mil-surp rifle barrel and I will need to move the front sight back a few inches as a result. Are these sights typically low temp soldered or silver soldered on? I have silver solder, but I'm a little concerned with heating the barrel up hot enough to get 1,100 degree solder to flow. Is this a common practice? Or should I go get some lead-tin solder and use that?

Thanks,

Saands

They are typically mounted with low temperature solder. I like Brownells "Hi-Force 44" solder for gun work.

Take the finish off the metal first, including bluing, or the silver solder won't stick. Bare metal only. Last time I did it, I used a propane torch with no fuss or bother.
