Price check on M44 Nagant - retail purchase

Hi folks,
Local GS has the short Rusian carbines for $126 out the door including 440 rouunds of mil surp ammo.
I like the idea of being able to look the rifle over prior to purchase. Any thoughts about what that is costing me? I know that the rifles are in the 60 dollar range. Shipping and ammo are probablyy another 30 bucks or so. So it "looks" like a decent deal, but wanted your thoughts on it.
Oh - I would suppose the ammo is corrosive as well?
TIA,
Al

It is a fair price. Even if the rifle is ugly with a beat up stock. As long as there is some rifling in the bore. The ammo is worth about $0.10 per round, so that is $44 for ammo and that leaves you with $82 for a high powered rifle. Just realize that the rifle may only shoot to point of aim with the bayonet extended, so if you may look like a nut at the range. I enjoy the looks I get though.

Including the ammo? There's nothing wrong with that price. You are correct, the ammo is corrosive. You ought to be able to find one with a great bore, digging through the ones they have in stock.
I wonder what your next Mosin purchase will be? I don't know anyone who stopped at one!

It depends a lot on the condition of the guns. I saw some Nagants at a show on Sat. that looked like they were really only worth $60! A buddy of mine picked up a M44 1944 Russian Nagant at the same show. It was really sweet, say 85% and probably unfired for $115. I saw another one,an M44 Romanian 1955 with real nice metal,75% bluing, smooth action and trigger, with furniture that still had a nice finish but with more dings and just a few specs of light surface rust on the bolt for $75. My friend snagged 100rds. of new Wolf ammo for $24. Happy hunting! :) Marcus

The sporting goods store here used to regularly sell Hungarian Mosin Nagants M44 with all matching numbers and good stocks for about $60. But I haven't seen them at that price for a while. With the ammo, that sounds like a good purchase.
Erich: Sorry to burst your bubble, but I only have one currently. A second one is either way down a list of handguns, Bushmaster, and lever action. Or could be settled with a smokin' deal at the next show I am at. :D

My local Dunhams Sporting Goods usually sells the M-44 at around $50-$55, sometimes as low as $35. I have a 1954 vintage Romanian M-44, and yes, the bayonet folded vs extended does make about a 3" to 4" windage difference @100Yds.

Recently paid $ 100.00 for a 1946 Soviet M44 in mummy wrap. If the M44 is in excellent shape (all matching) the price is ok because of the ammo. Shipping on the ammo alone is probably $10-15.

The price is fair and not too out of line. To compare prices check here (http://www.allans-armory.com/russia.html) for some listings of individual MNs.

I agree the price is fair. I paid $50 for my M44 from dunhams and $55 for 440 rounds. So if the gun is in good condition I say buy it.

Run, don't walk. You'll be happy.
I bought mine (in fact bought 3) Russian new in wrap from AIM Surplus when they became popular. Price was around $89 for the rifle, plus shipping. I kept the best one.
Yes, they do indeed shoot better with bayo extended. Very accurate rifle and a crowd pleaser every time you bring it out.

Thanks folks. I picked it up yesterday and have it apart for cleaning up and a stock refinish.
Trigger is not as good as some I've felt - plenty light, just not crisp. Crown looks good and the bluing is fine.

Congrats on your new M44. Does it have the folding spike bayonet??
