My brother just got an 870 my bestfriend has a 590. I hear people say 870's are junk and I hear people say 590's are junk. What do you guys think? It definitly gonna be HD/assault gun.

I have used both very extensively. The 870 is the better built gun, but it isn't a huge margin. Both are good, but the 870 is a little more durable. Unless you plan on 10K plus rounds per year you won't have it long enough to find the difference. The safety being in the proper location on the weapon is a huge advantage for the 590, otherwise pick the 870.

A good shotgunner can be deadly with either. Get the one that FEELS best to you...

870 junk? Not around here they aren't.

I've owned a Mossberg 500 and fired a 590 extensively.

I kept the 870.

I just bought a brand new Winchester Defender 1300 with 8 shot capacity. Didn't do it because I necessarily thought it was better than the 870, but simply because it felt better to me.

The Remington 870 has a well deserved reputation of being the SG that all others are judged by and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one in a minute.

The people I know wouldn't trade them for anything. But I still like my new Winchester.

Wilhelm, The next time your friends refer to an 870 as junk, Ask them why then would they be the number one shotgun owned by more police departments and correctional agencies in the entire world! For the price, there is no more reliable weapon and I would want it with me in just about any situation. I would agree they are not the prettiest and often the fit and finish is lacking but the function and durability is proven many millions of times.
If ever there was or is an industry work horse the Rem. 870 and S&W Model 10 K Frame would be the hands down winners.

Definitely check out a Winchester Defender 1300 / FN Police Shotgun.

They come with all the things you need for about $250.

8 shot capacity
sling mounts (for use outside :) )
and the fastest pump action out there.

Lets see....How long has the 870 been made? 40 years or so, I would say.

Junk???? Not likely. Junk has a long history of falling by the wayside fairly soon.

I happen to prefer Mossberg, but then, I can't argue with how good the Remingtons are. Oldest Brother has an 870 that he bought in 1966 or thereabouts. Hunts everything from ducks to deer with it.
