My buddy has a time share in Palm Springs and we want to take out our Mosin's and mess around. There has to be some nice open desert areas out there. Any places you guys regularly shoot? Thanks, Tyler

I know it's been a long time since the post, but there is an abandoned police range on 111 1 mile (exactly) south from the Overture Road turn. Look for a small dirt drive with lotsa trash and junk. Do NOT shoot near the road or you will be cited.

Yep, that's the place.

I believe the nice folks over at the local gun store gave me directions, but as I recall the directions above are correct. Been over a year since I was there but it works.

It wouldn't hurt to check-in with local law enforcement to see if there's any guidelines more recently issued on the use of that range, and to get their suggestions. Plus in the event that you (later) have any "issues" arise, the fact that you had talked with them in advance before going out there might be helpful.

One other suggestion: The is a Palm Springs Gun Club --- IDPA types as I recall. They welcome visitors and have a lot of fun at their local matches, including as I recall a Steel Challenge.

Look on the Internet for a link to the Palm Springs Gun Club and call them up. They're pretty helpful.

I was stationed at MCAGCC for 4 years. You are in the middle of hundreds and hundreds of square miles of nothing. I recommend driving out into the dessert up past Yucca Valley and setting up whatever range you darn well please. No range rules, no range fees, no other people, peace and quiet.

Thats what me and my fellow jarheads always did.

I used to live in Yucca Valley until 2000. We used to set up just a few minnutes into the desert and go at it all the time, no problems.

A side note...there used to be a good ole boy gun shop in Desert Hot Springs called Condor Guns. Craig is the owner. About 3 miles north of his shop is a canyon that actually leads all the way back to Yucca Valley. We used to go up in the canyon about 1000 yards or so and shoot up there.

Give Condor Guns a call and tell him Steve that moved to Texas sent ya. Good bunch of folks in there....sure miss them

Back in that canyon you used to shoot in sounds like a trail that a friend of mine used as commuter hiway on his dirtbike. He lived in Yucca and worked the trades in PS. He was a certifiable nut and a good guy to know. I left there in 83 so it is good to hear of places people had fun in. Specially the nooks and crannies of that area.

Used to spend a lotta time at Joshua Tree. Before the stone climbers found it. Could be out there all day and nite. Never see a soul. Love to hear any more stories about the area. I lived across from the big water tank at the top of the hill on the south side of DHS. Early 80's. Coyotes used to eat off my porch and then go on down town to raid the garbage cans. Oh yeah. They always told me when to expect a quake. :uhoh:

Calzoom, I know all about the "hiway" between Yucca and DHS. I have ridden it on my dirt bike many times. My friends dad used to live up in Yucca and ride down to work that way also...his name was Larry, any relation...?

I have been all over those hills...edom hill etc....love the sand out there!

PM me with more info.
