How big is your ghost ring?

I'm just curious to see how big the aperture on your ghost ring setup is, who made it, and how you like it. If you feel it's either too big or too small say so, and why.

Also - where is it mounted? Toward the rear or the receiver, right where the "flat" starts, or toward the front of the receiver?

I think the ghost ring is what would work well for me but I'm trying to get a better feel for what's out there and what works well. I have an 870, BTW.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

For a peep sight of any kind to work properly it has to be near the eye, because the eye automatically centers the peep to the eye. On forward mounted longguns or hand guns it doesn't work. A 3/16 to 1/4" peep seems to work well for me and others. The ghost part ( thin ring) is there so as not to obstruct vision outside the target area. The front sight should be square for best vertical indexing.

What are you going to try to get out of the ghost ring? Hunting and 100 yard shots? Hallway distances and buckshot? Use of the gun makes a difference.

My ghost ring is so small I cannot even see it, all I can find is one white bead up on the end of the barrel. Sarcasm off now, I just don't see the need for sights on a defensive shotgun. Slugs out to 65 yards on milk jugs are 100% hits, man sized targets at 100 yards are easy to hit. Practice will pay off if you put in the time and effort. I prefer to keep it as simple as I can.

A shotgun used for hunting is another matter, game deserves the utmost respect and accurate placement of a slug is needed. A ghostring would be OK for this, but a scope even better.

Honestly it's mostly for 3-gunning and the like. For "defensive" purposes I feel pretty good with the bead, but I found in 3-gunning I have a habit of lifting my head a little and shooting over the targets (especially with slugs). I figure a ghost ring would give me a better point of reference to remind me to keep my head down, and help me make the longer slug shots a little easier.

Oh OK, it might make sense then. I am dying to try some 3 gun stuff, but have not been able to find any open shoots near me:( :( Maybe some of the hardcore 3 gunners will step in and help you out.

Being an old fashioned kind of guy, my GR sights are Williams and Lyman peep sights with the apertures removed. They can be replaced for range work, or taken out for close and/or low light shooting. And yes, I like them.

But like H said, GRs are not essential for HD.
