870 Ported Barrel Trivia

Just picked up this 20" Remington marked barrel with rifle sights for my Wingmaster.
The porting is very cleanly done on both sides and it looks like the barrel was blued after it was ported. Could this be factory work ?
Thanks

Hello sir!
I don't recall Rem ever doing porting in-house.
Magna-Port (tm), more specifically Pro-Port (tm) is the divison that does shotguns. Pro Port is done by EDM ( no drilling in conventional sense) and the holes are more ellipitical.

Ballistic Specialties (tm) [ I think that is correct name] is another company that comes to mind.
Your pic shows the ports to appear to be drilled "straight" in - 90* to bbl. I can't tell if "drilled" or "lasered".
I have seen many examples of various Companies. Some folks send this work out to shops who are better set up, with the newer technologies. Like many gunshops they specialize in areas and send guns out for Hardchrome, bluing ...etc. Same principle.
There are a lot of folks , local gunsmiths that really know guns and do porting as well - Quality porting.
Plenty of Shade tree "hole drillers" as well.
I would look and see if a Trademark Stamp / Logo exists, IIRC The bigger companies "sometimes" add a mark to identify whom did the work.

Those holes look drilled to me. You can see a raised burr around each hole. EDM doesn't leave any burrs.
They also look "home-made". Look at the long row of holes on the bottom. You can see that they're not all inline. If this was done on a mill they'd all be lined up perfectly.

Looks like a Bubba job to me. They are not straight.

Thanks Guys
On close inspection I can see the uneven placement.
Still shoots fine, if really loud !

Do you feel that the porting does anything ?
I am not going to venture a guess as to whether it was home made or not. I am not that good.
It does look similar to a Vang Comp barrel.
I own a Vang barrel. With "low recoil" slugs it has very little recoil. With full 1 oz slugs it seems to offer no recoil reduction.

A friend had his Remington Marine Mag. that day and with the same loads I couldn`t tell any real difference, although the Marine Mag. is a heavier gun.
In my limited experience it doesn`t seem worth it because of the extreme noise and flash, even at dusk.
