Fixing rusty magazines...

PDA

I recieved an order of magazines for my AK and they had some rust on them. Lo and behold, the rust has caused bad pitting in some spots, roughtly akin to checkering on a rifle, only half as deep.

What should I put on them to help this? I have scrubbed the outsides the best I can with an SOS pad, and it seemed to get most of it off, sans for the deep stuff that I would need a dremel for (kinda ruins the mag though). Black Rustoleum? The mags are black, so I dont think a bluing solution would do the trick, although I have never worked with bluing solution.

Any help is appreciated.

Unless you really remove all the rust it will continue to react with the metal.

Strip the mags, sandblast the metal, and refinish. Keep the parts oiled.

For deep pits, I have but two words: Naval jelly.

I used some of that stuff on some deep pitting on my old Tbird, then primered and painted. No bubbling yet, and it's been 4 years. I haven't waxed that paint either... the car's been a yard queen for a couple years :)

For the price of AK mags, you could afford to toss them, keeping any good parts for replacements. :D

I use a bench-mounted rotary wire brush, keep the pressure on until you see bare metal. Definitely requires eye protection:
