Want to get a western-style leather holster for a 4.5" Single-six. Never had anything so impractical before, so could use any suggestions. Thanks!

My personal opinion...

Make one.

Go study various catalogs online. Use a technique where you drill 3/16th" holes down one edge, measured to the gun, then use leather cord or leather shoelace to do up the edge.

I'm quite serious here...basic holstermaking should be in everybody's bag of tricks and that gun isn't worth putting big money into if not an everyday carry item.

Hmmm, so I guess because I don't carry every gun I have everyday, I should buy quality holsters for them? Not me. If I'm gonna spend a few hundred $ on a firearm, I'm not gonna skimp and let it ride in a cheap twenty $ chunk of mass-produced hide. I may only carry one of my Ruger SA during hunting season but do they deserve a cheap hide too? All my leather is Mitch Rosen (w/ 2 exceptions). For my Single Six I believe I still have the Hunter brand holster that was given to me years ago. I do remember it being a decent one.
I know Ruger offer a limited line of holsters from Galco and Bianchi(?) maybe one of those companies would be a decent place to look. They're affordable and should ofer something for you.

A quality leather holster for not a lot of money is the Hunter. For a few bucks more, El Paso Saddlery can make a custom holster for your Single-Six.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, guys. A tip from someone who's actually used a product is worth an infinite amount of slick ads.

Jim: I already make my own engineering lentiviruses from scratch. I think I'll let a skilled leatherworker do the leatherworking, principle of comparative advantage and all that. (You do make your own DNA from scratch, right? After all, basic genome modification should be in everybody's bag of tricks. I recommend you use a technique where you use four plasmids transfected into 293T cells, then infect your target cells with the filtered 293T supernatant overnight in DEAE and media. Don't pay ridiculous prices for store-bought ORFs that may not even have the right promoter, or come out of your spliceosomes correctly!)

Actually I imagine leatherworking would be fun, but I'm sure my first ten attempts would lack something in the asthetic department. My whole angle here is to trick hoplophobes into going shooting with a non-theatening "cowboy gun", so the holster has to look wholesome.

The Hunter western style holsters aren't bad at all, I got one with a used Single Six I bought a while back. The one thing that bugs me is that the rivet for the thumb snap is exposed inside the holster. I stuck a little square of duct tape over it to prevent the possibility of scratches. Other than that I've got no complaints.

Another vote for the Hunter. I have one for my 5 1/2" single six.

If you just want something to carry it in, for about $15 dollars you can get a cordura holster from Uncle Mike's at almost any gunstore.

Cabelas has some reasonably priced western (cowboy action) holsters. Even their basic black powder holster should work (about $14). Remember you can always use a longer holster for a shorter barrel, just not the other way around.

Well, that's because this isn't the auto forum, where there are many to explain the evils of less-than-fifteen-shooters in detail. :p Actually I like the safety aspect of single action for new shooters... or for myself when I'm just meandering around my rattlesnake-infested fields.

My first attempt at a belt holster:

Folded and laced leather construction. Belt mount in the rear puts the two conchos one over the other (forward tilt) and the conchos are hiding cross-lacing holding the center together. A leather strap is connected internally to a small piece of bungee cord to hold the hammer down on the smaller gun (4-shot 22Mag Freedom Arms minirevolver). I was going to do the same for the snubbie 38 but it didn't turn out to be necessary.

The snubbie is carried in an FBI strongside tilt, the mini is crossdraw :).

Not a great pic (flatbed scanner used :)) but it really looks pretty dang good. Lace-holes were drilled with a dremel tool, then leather stain and sealer was applied to plain leather. About $15 materials costs all told at Tandy Leather...and there's no other way I could have gotten one holster for two guns for a trip to AZ I took years ago...

About 3 hours labor involved.

I have a super single-six with the 4 5/8" barrel and have carried it for years in a Bianchi #1 Lawman holster. It's a Tom Threepersons type and very practical for woods bumming. Great gun.

I found my Bianchi on ebay for $4.50. Fits my single six perfectly. It can be a good place to find old holsters, many of which haven't seen much use.
