Does he need a license to do this or is it just illegal? War trophy?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A handgun that Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) was clutching when U.S. forces captured him in a hole in Iraq (news - web sites) last December is now kept by President Bush (news - web sites) at the White House, a spokesman confirmed on Sunday.

I suppose it's much handier than mounting Saddam in a glass case.......

I bet he can get any Federal gun permit he wants.....

Be nice if the media reported what it was.... BHP ? Makarov ?? ....

Wonder if he has a permit for it. Think of the children after all.

that we find the gun laws in Washington DC NOT to our liking. I just wonder if there is a special "law" for the President or other government officials that allow for the display of "government" property such as war trophys in the White House or other government buildings.

I too wonder what make weapon this is.

I was told he was captured with a Mak - no one knows what happened to his signature Browning. Most likely 50 years from now it will show up on the next generation E-bay....found in a closet of a vet.

I know that different PotUS have received guns in the past. It has never been a problem before. If you think about it, the secret service has plenty of guns in the White House. No problem in "permiting them" I'm sure. The media is just trying to make a big deal out of nothing.

The President is, among other duties, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (as well as chief law enforcement officer.) If he can't have a gun, who can?

Legally, captured property belongs to the United States. At one time, you could apply for release of a trophy weapon -- which was to say, the government would give you for free the property you captured.

The President, I assume, is simply issued this US property pistol, much as he is issued government-owned paintings and sculpture that he displays at the White House.

Heh, try taking a weapon home now, or since Grenda actually. Some Admiral flew a Lear jet full of AK's back to the states and ever since then they've made it illegal to bring anything back. I know in Beirut we would be court-martialed if we were caught.

I know a vet from WW2 that stuffed his Thompson into his duffel and took it home like it was just luggage.
I shot it once... talk about AWESOME!

Does this mean that Dubya is committing a felony in DC? Too bad he'd never get charged.

Why would it be a crime for the President to possess a weapon in D.C.?

After all, as Commander-in-Chief he can order a tank delivered to the White House and drive it up and down Pennsylvania Avenue all day long. I'd bet he could shoot on the White House lawn if he wanted to.

JohnBT, Pres. Lincoln liked to walk by the Potomac River and target shoot. He was an avid shooter and was very receptive to new inovations in firearms and ammo.

I just watched "The Wind and the Lion" and Teddy Roosevelt was shown blasting away in the yard with a 30/06, a 405 Winchester, etc. He even had target pits, like the army ranges. Those were the days!

Good for him. Since he is in charge of the Goverment I don't think he is breaking any laws. I am sure the Secret Service got a hold of that gun and shortened the firing pin. Heaven forbid someone bring in some ammo and start shooting stuff.
