I have my vices. I shoot. I smoke too. I have some nicely grained briar pipes. I have been wondering if grips for a pistol could be made from briar. Has anyone heard of a custom grip made from briar or maybe Italian redroot?

Briar pipes, the wooden ones you commonly see, are made from the wood of Erica arborea, a member of the heather family found in southern Europe. The best wood is found in the center of the root.

Then it'll be meerschaum instead of ivory... ;)

It'd be interesting to see grips made by Peterson and Savinelli... I could go for a nice set by Ardor :)

Briar burl has a lot of cracks in it naturally and it's very difficult to find a good piece large enough for grips (It can be done, but it is very difficult). Should make a pretty set of grips - but you may want to look around at other burls that have similar figure.

I've got a piece of amboine burl that wants to become a set of stocks. I doubt it would take heat the way briar would, but it's every bit as richly figured and somewhat lighter in color than most briar.

Amboyna makes nice grips...but I don't recommend it for a pipe :-)
