School crossbow attacker jailed

June 5, 2004

A LIFETIME of bullying caused a teenaged boy to snap and shoot his ex-girlfriend with a crossbow in a schoolyard, a judge said yesterday.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Graham Barr sentenced the 17-year-old, who cannot be named, to nine years' jail with a non-parole period of five years for shooting the girl and another student on April 3 last year.

He ordered the teenager, who showed no emotion at the sentence, to serve his non-parole period in a juvenile detention centre.

The youth shot his classmate and then 16-year-old ex-girlfriend in the back with the crossbow in the Port Stephens schoolyard after ordering the weapon over the internet.

The bolt passed through her chest, puncturing her lung, before pinning another girl's legs together.

He then threw petrol bombs at the two girls but they did not ignite.

In a non-jury trial in Newcastle, Justice Barr found the teenager guilty of two counts of malicious wounding with intent.

The youth had earlier pleaded guilty to using a prohibited weapon - a crossbow - without a licence.

Justice Barr said the youth had been the target of bullying all his life, - firstly from his second eldest brother who then encouraged other children at school to do the same.

"At the time of the offences there were only two friends whom he trusted," Justice Barr said.

Months before the attack he had broken off a relationship with his girlfriend because he believed she was more interested in another boy.

The court was told he was upset because the girl appeared happy when he ended the relationship, which was not sexual.

Justice Barr said the teenager would need ongoing psychological care to understand his actions.
