Fennell Calls for Citizen Self-Defense

Vermont-style Firearms Carry is Best Defense Against Violence and Terrorism

“Georgia should rescind all firearms permit laws and adopt the example set by Vermont,” says Joe Fennell, Libertarian candidate for Georgia Senate District 6. “Besides the fact that permits and fees plainly violate the Second Amendment, there is manifest evidence that an armed citizenry dramatically reduces violent crime.”

Generally, Vermont allows both open and concealed carry. The state does not require a permit or fee before a citizen can carry a gun, and there is no government-mandated waiting period. Vermont is also ranked among the lowest of the 50 states in violent crime and murder. FBI statistics from 1997 rank Vermont as 49th in per capita rate of violent crime, and 47th in murder.

“Georgia also needs to remove restrictions on where firearms can be carried,” says Fennell. Georgia law does not allow a citizen to be armed in an establishment that serves alcoholic beverages. “That means I have to leave my gun in the car before I can enjoy a meal in a nice restaurant. Does the Georgia legislature expect me to fend off an armed gunman with a salad fork?”

Fennell also believes that armed citizens are the best deterrent to domestic terrorism. “We simply cannot afford enough law enforcement to provide protection all of the time, in every situation. The first line of defense against domestic terrorism should be 'We the People.'”

I have a friend or two in Georgia... I'll have to see what district they're a part of, and convince them to vote for this guy. ;-)
