P22 break-in today, pretty good results

Hey all,

Sorry no pics. Went to the range with my roommate today and we broke in my new P22. Shot 500 rounds of Aguila Hyper Velocity, and I'd estimate 50 rounds of CCI, 90 rounds of Federal High Velocity and 40 of Winchester.

I had multiple failures to go fully into battery with the Aguila, and it was also shooting a bunch of unburned powder out the front. The Aguila also had a LOT of light strikes, and I had none with any of the other ammo. Not too fun but it gave me a chance to use the double action trigger. ;)

Had a few stovepipes with the Winchester and the Aguila, none with the CCI or Federal. My roommate had much more trouble with the gun than I did, not sure if it's the hand size or grip method or what, but he kept dropping the mag after almost every round until he changed his grip around.

The recoil was noticably higher on the Aguila than the other ammo too. I think I'll stick to high velocity Federal and CCI minimags from now on.

Accuracy was decent for combat but I wasn't really shooting for groups. Definitely not a match gun but should be a fine plinker. It was VERY dirty when I got it home and it's hard to reassemble once it's lubed up...slippery little guide rod. ;)

All in all I am pretty satisfied with it. i can see some wear already on the slide where the slide release lever catches on, but it's pretty moderate, and from what I hear it occurs when the gun breaks in and then just stays there. :)

(Oh and going back and forth from the .22 to the 45+P in the WW2 1911 was a big change! :D )

man, i picked mine up friday and haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet. just handling it and dry firing (with the safety on!!).

i did take it apart, and was impressed with how poorly thought out that aspect of the gun was. the takedown lever nearly require pliers, and reassembly was reminiscent of recanning worms. as the plastic rod, remarkably, does not fit through the hole in the front of the slide... i'm going to go dowel shopping soon.

I did some file work with mine to clear up some sharp edges that were catching bullet noses on manual cycles... was worth it, first trip to the range I passed through 380 rounds of federal walmart bulk without a single malfunction.

Mind your barrel nut, mine was spinning off fast at the 300 round mark, and I'd tightened it before I started. Tighten it hard when warm and it'll stay put, apparently.

Next time I hit the range, I'll probably put a full box (550 rounds) of federal bulk through it. Lots 'o fun for $10 ammo and $10 range time :)

As for light strikes... my federal cases looked like the firing pin was going to pinch *through* them....

Had to tighten up my barrel nut too. Thanks for the advice! :) I already have a box of 500 Remington Lightning to try at my next range trip.

Pauli, don't worry about dowels or rods or external help. What to do is squeeze the spring down on the guide rod and stick it through the slide and grab it from the front, *then* put the slide back on with a firm grip. You'll have to wiggle the rod around for the end to drop down into the hole in the barrel mount, but that's it.... you just pull the slide back and lock the disassembly catch.

It also helps to wash your hands first, handling that spring/guide rod while oily is like wrestling a greased pig.

...not that I've ever wrestled a greased pig.... :uhoh: :D
