I've just had better luck w/ the consistency of the S&W. I like the 640...compact, reliable, very little to snag on anything, & easy to shoot.
The biggest inconsistency I've found w/ th Tauri has been in their triggers. Some can be really nice while others can be really gritty.

10-RING how do the 640 and 340 compare?

I'm not 10-ring, but I've handled both and own the 340, and I can tell you how they compare: the 340 is a heck of a lot lighter. Ludicrous light. If you wanna carry a J-frame in your pocket, it's the clear choice.

Be forewarned, though, that it's never going to be as fun to spend 3 hours at the range with as the relatively leaden 640, and you will NOT want to shoot a lot of .357 out of it (a lot meaning any; if you shoot .357 to practice with a carry load, it will be an act of self discipline; if you like it, you are probably also into other pursuits best not discussed here).

So, depends on what you want. I wouldn't want it to be my only revolver, or even my only .357. It's such a fun and versatile caliber to shoot, I'm glad to have a 686+ that can handle a bunch of it and has a wonderful trigger and accuracy and whatnot. But that 340--man, it is a marvel of technology and a wonderful compromise between adequate power and easy front-pocket carry.

I'm not 10-Ring either, but I do have a S&W 640 and a S&W 340PD. I also have 3 Taurus snubbies (not hammerless), one each in .38Spl, .357 & .45 Colt. I will never buy another Taurus revolver.

By today's standards with the utilization of aluminum, titanium and scandium, I personally find my 640 a tad too heavy for comfortable front pants pocket carry. My 340PD is great except for the fact that I know I will NEVER fire full-power .357s in it. I have fired full-power .357s in my 640 and THAT wasn't a lot of fun.

They are a bit heavy for some folks to carry in their pockets, but I never had a problem in that respect.

And they are a LOT nicer for heavy loads than the helium-weights:D
