870 Police - weird ejector spring thing going on

I posted this on TFL as well hoping I can get some help...
I purchased an 870P in late 2001 or early 2002, cant quite remember. It's been an excellent safe queen, having shot it infrequently, my old Express is the workhorse. I was cleaning the Police model, had the bolt and TG out, and as I wiped down the inside of the receiver I noticed that the ejector spring is not tightly riveted down as in the Express, but floats about 1/16th inch. I can actually lift the ejector and it will stay raised without springing back down.
Is this normal? I haven't had any ejection failures, then again I've hardly shot this piece...
Any input would be greatly appreciated

Every 870 I've ever workied on has had the ejector tightly riveted into the receiver.
I just checked both of my own 870's, a 2003 870P and a 1975 Wingmaster and both of them have their ejectors tightly riveted into the receiver.
Does it look like the ejector on yours is tightly riveted down, or is it loose and floppy even at the attachment point?

The rivet is on solid, but there's a gap between the ejector and the surface of the rivet, which allows the ejector to float or flop...I also checked my Express and it's peened down tight.
I'll call Remington and find out if it's still under warranty

The forward rivot is a two step system with the first shoulder retaining the ejector and the second retaining the ejector spring.
What is loose on yours is the ejector spring as it was not properly peened to hold the spring tight.

rivrat, is this a critical thing to be seen to by Remington or a qualified smith?
Thanks for the answers all of you

It is not what I would consider a complicated fix , but it does need to get taken care of.
If you are comfortable with the process of peening the end of the rivot to tighten the spring it is not hard to do. You should support the flat side of the reciever with something hard but non-marring , and a small punch with light taps on the end of the rivot (inside) will do the trick.
If your not comfortable doing it yourself than any smith should be able to do it quickly and at little cost.
