ok, I am looking for rings and bases for a rem 700. I want somthing that alows me to remove and reattach the scope with out loosing zero. Leupols and several companies claim that have set that can do this, my question is can they? anyone ever try it, how did they work?

I have Leupold QRW rings on my 10/22 with the Volquartsen barrel mounted scope base (weaver cuts). Everynow and then I'll remove the scope when I do some serious cleaning and after remounting it, it pretty much holds zero. If it doesn't, it's off at most a 1/4 MOA or so.
But the only reason I even got the QRW rings is because I bought the rings locally, long before I discovered online / mail order. For a serious rifle, I'd avoid quick release rings. Any particular reason why you want to go with QR rings?
And no matter how good the rings are said to be, I would always reconfirm the zero if I ever removed and remounted the scope.

the answer is TALLEY!
Talley bases and QR rings I have used them with zero shift in point of impact/ point of aim change. Work like a charm, they are a little spendy but you get what you pay for with them. Besides most of the custom rifle builder's I've dealt with recommend them.
Buy em, you'll love em.

Ocabj,
We are moving to a new area for our elk hunts. Our current area is just getting too crowded.
This new area is a mix or open range land where 400 - 500 yard shots are common and thus I need a scope. The other half of this area is dense forrest where a 50 yard shot is much more probable.
If I had the rtuck near by I would just take two rifles with me, but, they have closed the gates to large vehicles and since I do want to leave me second rifle on the ATV when I walk around I need to set up one rifle to do both long and short range. For this, I picked up a 300WM. I plan to develop a long range cartridge and a short range cartridge. I would like to be able to take the scope off and use the irons when in the brush and then re-attach the scope when I move out in the open. That way, I can be gone from the ATV for a few hours and not worry too much.

Mgraff,
What do you consider spendy?

I think rings and bases would run you $100-150 maybe a little less check Brownell's or try

I too have the Leupold QRW rings and bases on a 700P. As ocabj said above, they are never more than 1/4 moa off after reinstalling.
I can also recommend (and prefer) the ARMS #22 rings as long as they are used on a true 1913 spec rail (Badger, PRI, NEAR, etc.). I have them on my SPR and they are great. I haven't seen any change in POI after removal and replacement.
