So Springfield is now producing Garands (again). Should I pay the near $1k price on these things, or chance it with a CMP?

Another option - though not perhaps as affordable - is a vintage restored weapon from Miltech (http://www.miltech.com).
I'm touring their facility this week and will report what I learn.

I have four CMP Garands and one DCM Garand that I bought from a gunstore and they all very good guns. I would recommend going with a CMP gun.

Also take a look at Orion 7. I plan on getting one of their Garands in a couple of weeks. NICE work.

I have one of the new Springfield Garands. I know, they run about $1000.00. I like the rifle ALOT. It has become my favorite rifle to shoot by far. I know you can get nice M1s for far less, but this one called to me, and I had to have it. Perfect functionality so far, and more accurate then I expected. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I haven't checked Fulton Armory's website for a while, they have a lot of info on Garands. I have a Korean War M1 that I want to send in.......

I have been hearing several people lately talking about getting a Springfield Armory Garand. The prices they are quoting certainly make me very happy that I bought one.............. for $700 cash. The thing that keeps me awake at night is that I could have had two, maybe even got them for less if I made the package deal.
I have owned Garands before. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. As a shooter, the DCM rifles are great. I personally liked the idea of having one in pristine condition. I haven't fired my Springfield yet, so I can't comment on function and accuracy. In fact, I haven't taken it home yet. I bought it close to a year ago and the day I purchased it I was leaving on vacation. I didn't want to take the time to figure out how to get it in my safe so I asked a friend to watch it for me. It is still at his house.

I too was wondering the same thing. I decided that if I went with the CMP Rack Grade @ $400, I could install a barrel, new stock and get it reparked locally and still have less than $1G in it. I was right. My rack grade has practically a new barrel, needed a stock @ $150 and it's going to get reparked next week for $100. So for $650 I have a "new" WWII era Springfield with the forged receiver. Not to mention I lucked out and got ALL correct parts with the numbers on them.
BTW, little is it known, but there are four major gun distributors/mfgrs. that are constantly trying to get the CMP shut down. They are soooo pissed that they cannot get a piece of the action with everyone and their brother right now buying Garands.
NOw this is all hearsay to me, but some of the other web sites this has been discussed.

I have a DCM Garand and a Korean expat gun. The DCM gun needed an accuracy job, but is very accurate with the original barrel. The Korean expat gun was worn out and need a new barrel and rebuild. It now is refinished with new barrel and wood. Work was done by Fulton Armory. Very nice now, but inexpensive gun is no longer inexpensive. New guns have investment cast receivers. They are ok, but I prefer the forged frames. The accuracy of the new ones suggests they will need an accuracy job, too.

My biased opinion is to chance it with CMP and then if you are not happy with it have it worked over by Deans, Orion, Miltech etc.
I am not clear on the following (ie if it is true or has any veracity at all) but I think I heard somewhere that the forged receivers put out by wartime factories is superior to what is being sold commercially now... double check on that as I am not sure of my facts.

Depends:
Did Springfield actually make the receiver and parts? Or did they just put their name on a Century Arms M1 Garand like they do with their SAR 8.
Also if they actually made the gun, is the receiver a casting like their M1As that are so troublesome lately? Are the internals USGI or SA production? If they are USGI what condition are the parts in? If they are SA are they as poorly made as some of the M1A rifle parts?
All in all I'd say stick with the CMP.
