What kind of stocks are out there to replace the plain black one? Wood thumbhole maybe?

Unfortunately, the VEPR has a slant cut receiver. This leaves you with only 2 options. You can go with the wood thumbhole stock that comes on some VEPR models from Robinson, or you can have the receiver converted by an AK smith to a more conventional style. If you are interested in the conversion, I would suggest you contact Mark Krebs.

Wes at Soupbowl enterprises can make you a nice replacement stock

the new Veprs have enough US parts to allow a pistol grip
in fact i think the pistol grip is a US part
better not replace any furnature with import stuff
the olde veprs with the thumbhole stock will need new US made parts if you want to change to a traditional AK pistol grip
