Would appreciate any and all recommendations for a compact scope for my Bushmaster,it has the removable carry handle so I could go with a flat top or handle mount. I would like to get the best for my $$ without having to mortgage the house.
Thanks Melvin

Fed168 has a Bushnell Holosight on the block as we speak.

I have a Bushnell 1-4 on my flat-top. It has a "turkey plex" or cirlce - X reticle. See below:

This type of reticle is big enough for fast, close work. But, the inner plex is fine enough for distance work. It works very well for me. I can "see" and hit 6" plates at 200 yards at 3-4x. At 1x it works amazingly well for house clearing exercises. You can even use the scope with a light-mounted AR. Most people don't realize this. I created this setup as a "do-all" AR-15. It is very suitable for varmint and social purposes at ranges from 0-200 yards.

I used the Rock River Arms mount

You can purchase the scope at www.basspro.com

Tapco makes a nice one made by Leepers. I have one on my Colt. They have a bullet drop compensator for up to 500 yards and made just for an AR rifle. They will mount on a flat top or carry handle. 3X9x28 variable.

The latest and greatest is here! Full military features: bullet drop compensation, military finish, see-through, mounts in the carry handle, and has variable power of 3 to 9 power for every need. The 28mm objective lens means a larger sight picture and extra light gathering for the most crisp & clear sighting available. Also comes with the Weaver base adapter to mount directly to your flat top or any other Weaver base. This scope is backed by the Leapers Lifetime Guarantee. It just doesn’t get any better! 8 inches in length.

I use a Leupold M-8 Compact, 2.5X. It is great if you are not planning on shooting with it at 4-500 yards.
Small, light weight, compact and quality for around $200.

What about using a shotgun scope (one of those short scopes)? I was thinking about putting one on a 20" A2, but I'm unsure of which one to get.

Actually, the bushnell scope I referenced is a shotgun scope (I think) some call the reticule a "turkey plex". i.e, the turkey's head fits right inside the small circle in the middle.

Wouldn't there be an Eye relief issue with Shotgun scopes?

That depends on where you put your head. :)

The usual concern is parallax adjustment. Most shotgun scopes are set to be parallax free at 50 yards. That's pretty limited for most people's rifle needs.

But...For quick shots/action/combat-type shooting at people-sized targets, the parallax error is minimal with a low power scope, especially within it's "rifle-usage" range.
