I'm going to get the Remy 870 as soon as I have the funds. I'd like to pick up a side saddle for this -- where can I find them and can the standard Remy Home Defender accept a 6 shot side saddle, or should I stay with the four shot one?

Also -- where can I get a buffer for the recoil -- any suggestions? My father is getting on in years and I want to make the shooting for him as plesant as possible. I'd appreciate any links to stores where I can get slings and other accessories at a reasonable price. Thank you.

Other than the units like the old Edwards and the newer Dead Mule, there's not much in the way of recoil buffers for the 870.

The good news is that adding a two shot extension made of metal and a 4 shot side saddle adds well over a lb of weight. Kick goes down like a paralysed buzzard.

So you wouldn't use a six shot side saddle?

The magazine extender is a little "neater". The side saddles just sort of hang there on the receiver.

In any case, you can't put a 6 shot side saddle on the 870 HD UNLESS you either change the fore end for a shorter Police type, OR cut the standard Express fore end down.

All the Express guns use the Sporting-length fore end, which interferes with operating the gun if a side saddle is installed.

This is no real problem, it's fairly easy to change the fore end or just cut the Express fore end off slightly.

One option you might look into: Remington sells an uncatalogued Express HD gun with a FACTORY installed magazine extension. This solves the ammo problem right out of the box.

There are two easy ways to cut down recoil on the 870.

One is to buy Reduced Recoil ammo.
Many ammo companies now sell buckshot which has significantly less recoil, but still are quite effective.
Many of these were developed because many police officers are now smaller men and women, who have problems taking the recoil of the standard buck load.

The second easy recoil "reduction" is to fit one of the new Super-elastic" recoil absorbing recoil pads.
Hogue sells a good one that is a "drop-in" for the synthetic Express stock.

These are made of a new elastomeric polymer that really helps reduce felt recoil.

What they said..... the HD has a sporting fore-end that'll take a four-shot SideSaddle, or swap the fore-end and get a sixshot.

www.choate.com I think is choate machine and tool's site, they make stocks and fore-ends, the police length (six-shot accepting) fore-end is about $15.

www.brownells.com has every gun part known to man and about 5 pages of just 870 stuff. :)

If I may interject a correction: that's http://www.choatemachinetool.com/ or http://www.riflestock.com/ NOT www.choate.com
