CCW: How Many Spare Mags/Speedloaders?

I have a spare magpouch for my USP45C. While 2 extras would be nice, and I'm a firm believer in 'the more the merrier', but does anyone feel that a third magazine would get you to the point of diminishing returns in round count vs concealment?

Keep in mind I'm about Runt's size :D Besides, if I use all 17 rounds of 230gr .45, I'd be beating feet to the next zip code already.

Agreed, the more the merrier, but in thise case, for my personal threat level (more yellow than brown, brown being SHTF :D ), having a 2nd mag is sufficient. Even tho most of my mag pouches are 2 mag carriers, I'm thinking I would hit diminishing returns re: what was on my belt.

For my USP 45C, I carry three mags, one in the gun and two in a Mitch Rosen "Deuce". For my Smith 340, I carry 5 in the wheel and two speed strips with 5 each.

Make it 2 spare mags for me.:)

Plus a few extra in the truck for backup purposes..

2 + bug here. I do not know what the tactically correct answer is. Perhaps 2 black mags?:D

Just right for me. Good shooting;)

Hardly any difference between concealing one spare mag vs. two. Plus, if you ever have to dump the mag that's loaded for whatever reason (malfunction, dead rounds...) now you'll have no spare mags if you need to use the spare to get your gun running again.

2 spares.

For offensive purposes, rifle and lots of mags,
For defensive purposes, one extra 15rd mag for my 10mm will be plenty!

Skunk, since when did you get a CCW? I want one too!

When carrying a pistol, one mag in the gun; one spare mag; and a Surefire flashlight. The mag and light are in a single belt holder, mag in front of flashlight. If I'm carrying a snubnose revolver in deep concealment, I usually carry one reload in a speedloader, and one in a Bianchi speed strip. Overall, I prefer to have 12 rounds minimum, either in my weapon or with one or two reloads. However, most shooting scrapes use 3 or 4 rounds, so hopefully I won't have to find out the hard way that I need more than 12!

El Tejon, the tacitcal answer is a Benelli but it may not be the practical answer ;)

Do you draw your BUG via weak hand?

3+ years ago I bought an IWB holster and a separate IWB single-mag holder. At the time, all my pants fit just fine while wearing both. Then, suddenly I discovered that the mag holder made my pants too tight. Now I've found that my pants are too tight even with the holster.

Skunk, roger that, oh, tactical one.

It depends, bug is carried port side behind extra mags so I may access it with either hand. No one promised me a rose garden or having two hands in a fight.

7+1 in the SA Champ
8 in reserve mag, no seating problem with the slide locked back.

If I need more than 16 rounds and the threat my pistol represents to the BGs, my odds of survival are quite poor in any event.

If I ever feel I am going somewhere that will require videogame/movie style supression fire, I will pack a full size 9mm (non-existent at the moment, CZ 85B in the near future) and a spare for spraying. We just haven't had that LA type riot that may propel Skunk's question.:p

Hiding one mag, even of the thin proportions of the 1911 mags, is way easier than two. I do not carry two spare tires in my cars either.

Sometimes I carry a speed loader. Most often, not.

I vary what I do but if you are woried about concealability try using 2 seperate single mag carriers as opposed to one double. It will hug your body and conceal much better. Your p7 mags would be especially easy. The setup I use most now is a combo spare mag holder and p32 holster(spare mag for 1911). It is easy I guess to overload as I suppose I should throw one of my surefires in there.

One in the gun(1911) and one spare and a box of 50 in the truck or car.

I carry one in the gun, two on the belt, a third one in my hip pocket. In the car I keep 3-4 extra mags and several boxes of ammo.

/scratching chin/

Milt Sparks used to make a 6 mag carrier for .45 mags. That plus what's in the gun makes something like 50 rounds on tap. It wasn't really all that noticeable.

'Course, it did weigh the belt down a bit...

:D

Serioiusly, two really doesn't make much more of a load (or bulk) than one.

SIG229 - one extra mag in a holder with a Surefire

Smith 642 - two speedloaders or two speed strips depending upon clothing. Surefire clipped to pocket or in belt holder.

Smith 65 - two speedloaders or two speed strips depending upon clothing. Surefire clipped to pocket or in belt holder.

One spare mag. One pepper spray. One Scorpion flashlight. One Benchmade folder. One cell phone. In trunk of car one AR with two loaded mags.

A firearm without ammunition is an expensive paperweight.

A firm believer in Murphy's Law, I carry as many spare mags as concealment clothing will allow - and I get a little creative. Tac-light, ASP, knife and BUG (with 2-3 reloads) never varies.

Perfectly Normal. Especially when it comes in close proximity of Beer on a regular basis. :D

Back to topic: Why not just make your extra mag a larger one instead of carrying two if your trying to save space/weight?

USP 45, two extra mags and USP45C for backup.

Wow.

That's 40 rounds of .230gr hollowpoints! Reehaw!

Nah your pants are obviously shrinking in the wash. Darn natural fibers/artificial fibers/blends always do that don't you know. :D

I think Skunky is fantasizing about the day when he leaves the PRK, and to a free state that has shall-issue CCW laws. Vermont would be better though. ;)

Me, call me a hopeless optimist, I think that Jim March might one day succeed. That, or a big earthquake swallows up Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.

I don't feel the need to carry any spares. I believe that a magazine full in the gun will be enough outside of a war zone :)

I don't carry any spares at all. Just 8+1. I think in part because I never got a nice mag holder. I have a cheap Kydex spare holder that's never ever been on a belt. Guess I should get a couple nice mag holders just to have. In case I'm preparing to do something that would require 40+ rounds of 200 Gr Gold Dots.

Of course, I always have the P32 as my spare I guess.

I always carry two spare magazines for the primary carry gun, a 6 round shell loop and a Bianchi Speedstrip for the backup gun, plus various sharp things and a light.

Lets see, thats 44 rounds. Yeehaw! ;)

I usually keep at least 1 spare magazine, and sometimes 2 depending on the situation and clothing choice. Generally if 14 or 21 rounds of .45ACP does not end the situation, it will at least let me break contact and hoof it.

It all depends on where I am. If I'm in the rural area I call home, then I seldom carry more than just my C7-45 loaded with 8 rounds of Silvertips.

If I venture into the big cities (Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville,m etc.)
I carry a spare 7 round mag. If I need more than that I will be leaving the scene in search of heavier armament.

With a 1911 I carry 2 spares, one loaded with JHP and the other with FMJ, and sometimes the 649 on my ankle. If I'm carrying just the 649 (which is rare) I'll carry one extra speed strip.

I've been keeping up w/ this thread as it has grown. I've started debating about a BUG....what goes best w/ USP? a USPc?:scrutiny: or another mag?
